U.S. forces dropped a 22,000-pound bomb on Islamic State forces in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday. When discussing the strike, Pentagon officials referred to the GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast weapon, or MOAB, by its nickname, "the mother of all bombs."
That nickname soon appeared in headlines in the New York Times, Al Jazeera, CNN and even Wired. Meanwhile, #MOAB began trending on Twitter.
But some on social media were offended by the gendered nature of the phrase.

Anyone notice the mainstream media's trick with this? Pull a few quotes off Twitter, which are then used to justify an entire article, one which the author wanted to write to push their own personal opinion.
You can find a few tweets saying just about anything on any issue. It hardly merits a 600-word article.

Precisely.
It was that barbaric creep who introduced the Mother of All Battles term. MOAB nickname was a way to ridicule a vicious enemy, and whether intentional or not, might have contributed to our psyops (or at least morale) at the time.
Nothing sexist about it, although I will not be surprised if some pentagon wobbly changes the moniker to "monster" of all bombs or something perhaps less offensive to monsters.
