WaPo: Phrase 'mother of all bombs' decried as 'sexist,' 'grotesque'

U.S. forces dropped a 22,000-pound bomb on Islamic State forces in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday. When discussing the strike, Pentagon officials referred to the GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast weapon, or MOAB, by its nickname, "the mother of all bombs."

That nickname soon appeared in headlines in the New York Times, Al Jazeera, CNN and even Wired. Meanwhile, #MOAB began trending on Twitter.

But some on social media were offended by the gendered nature of the phrase.

I’ve heard similar complaints about language like this.

Off the top of my head, I recall complaints about black coffee; that somehow this is racist to talk of black coffee.

Also, there is a term in science, in physics perhaps, term is daughter particles. I’ve heard some people bitch about that. Its demeaning to anyone who is a daughter? At least in the radical activist mindset it is.

It's a play on a phrase Saddam Hussein made up, "Today is the Mother of All Battles." Ever since he said that back in 1990 or 91 people have used the phrase "The mother of" to describe virtually everything big. He even used it to describe his mother : Subha Tulfah al-Mussallat was the mum of former Iraqi leader Sadaam Hussein. In the Iraq war she was referred to as the Mother of Militants.
