Border plan overlooks driver of illegal immigration: visas
Seattle Times ^ | April 13, 2017 | By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON

MIAMI - Uruguay’s banking crisis had already claimed Rosana Araujo’s savings when she and her family, tourist visas in hand, boarded a Miami-bound plane in Montevideo. She stayed in Miami after her visa expired, supporting herself on random jobs, cleaning homes or babysitting.

“I feel lucky because I got here in a plane,” she said. “I feel lucky because I didn’t have to cross a desert.”

While the national discussion on immigration focuses on securing the U.S.-Mexico border with a multibillion dollar wall, travelers such as Araujo who overstay their visits have become the main source of illegal immigration in the United States. The Homeland Security Department said 527,127 people — more than the population of Atlanta — who entered the U.S. by plane or ship, not land, and were supposed to leave the country in the 2015 fiscal year overstayed. Demographers estimate that two-thirds of foreigners who arrived in 2013 and are now in the U.S. illegally were admitted with valid travel documents, the New York-based Center for Migration Studies Found.

The obstacles those who overstay face depend on the state where they live. Some can’t get a driver’s license or in-state tuition rates. Many, such as Araujo of Uruguay, work random jobs cleaning homes or babysitting and avoid airports and law enforcement.

In a recent trip to New York, she traveled by car with friends from Miami instead of flying. She wanted to ride the Staten Island Ferry to cruise by the Statue of Liberty but held off when she saw Homeland Security vehicles parked near the terminal and heard officials were screening passengers.

She hopes she’ll have another opportunity someday to lay her eyes on the iconic symbol of freedom.

I've seen estimates that up to 40% of all illegal aliens are tourist, student, business, etc. VISA overstays.

The F1 student visa is WAY WAY OUT OF CONTROL.

We allow fly-by-night diploma mills to rubber stamp visas for virtually ANYBODY from ANY country. Sometimes for short-term “English immersion” courses.

Few if any go home. Will not be shocked when the squad that pulls off the next 9-11 turns out to be F1 overstays.

The universities/colleges are supposed to notify ICE if the student drops out and disappears. They don’t. It is time to sanction the schools that don’t cooperate and suspend their ability to issue I-20s.

They are legal until they violate their visa. Then they are just as illegal as someone who sneaks in thru the border.

Absolutely agree. Just making the point that they didn’t start out that way.

Solution.....ankle bracelet RFID. When time for visa expires, trace the signal and pick’em up. If they take off the bracelet, it signals, pick’em up. If it works for our own criminals, it ought to work for this.

.....stayed in Miami after her visa expired...

Adrianna, this ILLEGAL intended to do it from the start even before she planned the trip. I don't give a flying flip-doodle crap about her dreams or false 'plans and wishes' or what she 'wanted to see.'

This heart-tugging crap don't play no more, honey. Most certainly because the author this has an Hispanic surname and probably didn't even to bother to check anything beyond 'Mexican, Hispanic or whatever.'

We are going to rid our country of you people. Going to cut that influx to the bone. And worse is coming..... sharpen your pencil, b!tch, you're gonna need it.

A distinction without a difference.

It’s a conflict of interest. These schools have an interest in continuing to get tuition payments from foreign students.

Because they hope to be able to charge tuition for another semester... I know these people, for sure.

Indeed. They overlook impropriety in favor of vastly overpriced out-of-state tuitions. This is BIG business.

I have a colleague whose son studied in Denmark.

They made it abundantly clear to him, both in writing and in a stern lecture at the airport, that his permission so stay in the country EXPIRES on such and such a date, and if he did not leave by that date he would be PROSECUTED and then DEPORTED.

They gave him sort of a temporary SSN, which was required to open a bank account, rent an apartment, buy a transit pass, and do many other things. On the day his visa expired it turns into a pumpkin.

Point is, other countries are serious about this. Why aren’t we?

visa overstays= illegal aliens

Yes, trying to mitigate their status by saying they entered legally is just an extension of “I beat the Border Patrol, so I get to stay.”
They’ve got to go back. It’s the law.

I’ve known quite a few aliens who did not overstay their visas but they illegally violated the terms of their visas by working when on a non work visa (typically 6 month tourist or ‘laser’ visa). They worked as nannies, bartenders, etc and would fly home twice per year. Their visas were current but they violated the law. They should not be considered any more legal than those who come without a visa.

One would think the rules are clearly indicated for those who care to follow them. My personal assertion is that most have no intention to follow the rules and only seek to ‘get over’ on the rules by whatever means.

Brazen beyond belief. She even has her picture taken for the article.

These f@cking foreign invaders do whatever the hell they want here, while at the same time complaining about our nations laws.
