Marine Le Pen's Holocaust remarks condemned by Israel

Israel on Monday slammed statements by French far-right presidential contender Marine Le Pen suggesting that France was not responsible for the roundup of Jews at a stadium in Paris during World War II.

“I don’t think France is responsible for the Vel d’Hiv,” she told RTL radio on Sunday, referring to the Paris cycling stadium where 13,000 Jews were rounded up in July 1942 before being sent to Nazi death camps.

"I think that generally speaking if there are people responsible, it's those who were in power at the time. It's not France," National Front party leader Le Pen told the broadcaster LCI.

She later defended her comments in a statement, saying: "I consider that France and the Republic were in London during the occupation and that the Vichy regime was not France," referring to the government at the time.

"It does not in any way exonerate the personal and personal responsibility of the French who participated in the vile round-up of the Vel d'Hiv and all the atrocities committed during that period," she added.

“This declaration is contrary to historical truth,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said Monday in response to Le Pen’s remarks.

“This recognition is the basis for remembrance day events that mark the anniversary of the Jewish expulsion from France as well as the study of the Holocaust in its education system,” it added.

But on the other hand Israel does not condemn George Soros for actually collaborating with the Nazis to turn his own people over.

Again, those on the right should not mention Hitler.

It doesn’t seem to go well when we do.

Spicer learned that lesson this week.

She said that those actually responsible bear the blame, and that France need not carry some collective national burden of guilt and shame (the way Germany seems to). Seems like a perfectly reasonable statement to me.

Historically, French police rounded up French jews, Belgian police rounded up Belgian jews, and so on down the line. In Europe, there was a lot of guilt to go around.

I understand what she is saying, “that’s not who we are”. But historically, it was who a lot of people were.

She said a factual statement

France was an occupied nation

That’s why they are called collaborators

They collaborated with an occupying force

A badassed methodical occupying force

The only France that counted was in the one in exile

Le Pen ain’t owning Vichy France and I don’t blame her

Hitler-NAZIS-Jews is frankly, the sort of “sacred cow” of politics and historical discussion.

No-one was ever worse than Hitler (see Sean Spicer), no movement was ever worse than NAZIs, and no-one was ever treated worse than Jews in German-occupied areas during the Hitler regime.

This is the tac you must take or you are in huge doo-doo.

Pretty much.

Otherwise, we must also highly criticize the Koreans for collaborating with their conquerors.

Criticism is due, don’t get me wrong, but when you’re being strong-armed it’s kinda hard to simply blame all Koreans/French for being “weak” and “cowards” for not somehow all dying in defying their oppressors.

Good point and I don't blame her either.

Actually, its an important point she needs to make. Most of Europe finds itself ruled by "Vichy" governments right now, who have thrown open the gates to their enemies. And heaven help anyone who dares to say so out loud.

France needs Le Pen right now.

Spicer and Le Pen, need to learn to first rule of Politics.

Never mention Hitler nor The Holocaust. Even if you have a valid point, just don’t go there. You are walking into a political minefield every time.

Agreed. How about this - STFU about ‘Hitler’ comments.
Like RACIST and SEXIST it has no punch anymore, and honestly never meant anything to me, regardless of which side said it.
Just stop with the Hitler/Nazi/SS references already. They’re so overused and 99% of the people using it don’t really know jack sh!t about WWII.
(/soapbox)
Thanks for listening. :)

“Again, those on the right should not mention Hitler.”

So simply refer to him as the left-wing socialist chancellor of Germany until 1945.

Leftists REALLY hate that.

So, her opposition is claiming that Vichy was France?

Interesting, and very revealing.

Isn’t La Pen at least a speed bump in the way of an Islamic France? Would an Islamic (nuclear) France be in Israel’s best interest? Maybe Israel should hold off on criticism of an apparent ally in La Pen. JMHO

Marine Le Pen is a socialist. How does a socialist become far right wing? I like her position on immigration, and Islam. I hope she gets elected but she is not far right wing.
