Metastasizing Academic Cancer (Walter Williams)
Creators Syndicate ^ | April 12, 2017 | Walter E. Williams

The average American has little knowledge of the extent to which our institutions of higher learning have been infected with a spreading cancer. One aspect of that cancer is akin to the loyalty oaths of the 1940s and '50s. Professors were often required to sign statements that affirmed their loyalty to the United States government plus swear they were not members of any organizations, including the Communist Party USA, that sought the overthrow of the United States government. Fortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down loyalty oaths as a condition of employment in 1964.

Today we're seeing the re-emergence of the mentality that gave us loyalty oaths, in the form of mandating that faculty members write "diversity statements," especially as part of hiring and promotion procedures. They are forced to pledge allegiance to the college's diversity agenda. For example, the University of California, San Diego requires that one's "Contributions to Diversity Statement" describe one's "past experience, activities and future plans to advance diversity, equity and inclusion, in alignment with UC San Diego's mission to reflect the diversity of California and to meet the educational needs and interests of its diverse population (http://tinyurl.com/mm6vzzq)." George Leef, director of research at The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, has written an article titled "Loyalty Oaths Return with Faculty 'Diversity Statements'" (http://tinyurl.com/mxy363c). His article documents the growing trend of mandated faculty diversity statements — such as that at Virginia Tech, in which "candidates should include a list of activities that promote or contribute to inclusive teaching, research, outreach, and service."

It’s not just universities that require ‘Diversity Action Plans’ in their annual performance plans and rankings. I know at least one major corporation (Chevron) does too.

The Academic Elite. As bad or worse than the Political Elite. Academia is as rife with corruption and lies as the government.

Ed Harken: A lot of you have been hearing the affiliates complaining about a lack of diversity on the news team.

Champ Kind: What in the hell’s diversity?

Ron Burgundy: Well, I could be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

Ed Harken: Ron, I would be surprised if the affiliates were concerned about the lack of an old, old wooden ship, but nice try.

A lot of money in this racket. Clemson U has a Diversity Czar that makes $185k. This week he’s teaching that being “on time for work” is racissss...

Several friends work for Eli Lilly...they have to deal with the crap all the time now. Not just the diversity, but all the touchy-feely corporate propaganda that is fed to the gullible young employees. Most of the ones in my generation just grunt and count down the days to retirement. It’s the same for another friend at a steel company. It’s all over any government office too.

In fact, the cancer has metastasized into every nook of American life.

The real shame is how few condoning this understand the betrayal of academia it represents. Diversity of thought, opinion, and honest intellectual debate is the cornerstone of higher education. The hatred and silencing of opposing viewpoints is the exact opposite of traditional liberalism.

The real story is about how the progressive agenda has not only captured our universities (and public schools) - it is destroying education. In fact, one could argue that there is an inverse relationship between indoctrination and the quality of education. Another point is that (like everything they control) as the quality decreases the costs increase greatly.

At some point I believe more universities will seek success and move away from this agenda, but they will have to suffer in the pocketbook first. They will not do that until we remove the massive government financing of higher education.

From the article:Or, parents, donors and legislatures can just check to see if the college has a conservative outlook. Like Hillsdale, Liberty, Bob Jones, et al.

Elected and appointed reps and officials swear loyalty to the Constitution.

I say state employed profs are also public officials with tremendous responsibility to promote, or at least not be against Constitutional principles. There is no right for state employees to pollute young minds.

I don’t know how much longer our once free republic can withstand law by social justice. If a court can repeal probably 50 state laws against fag marriage, it feels empowered to do anything.

It would be well if more Conservatives really stopped to analyze what the Left actually is about in this lunacy:

"Diversity!".
