A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Louisville was overbooked, so the airline sought 4 passengers to voluntarily give up their seats in exchange for cash and a free night in a hotel.
When no one took the offer, the airline used a computer to choose volunteers at random. One man chosen refused, saying he was a doctor who had to see patients in the morning. Thats when police were called and the man was physically dragged down the aisle and off the plane.
United Airlines said they needed the seats for airline employees who had to be in Louisville on Monday for their jobs.
The airline originally offered $400 and a night in a hotel to anyone who gave up their seat. When no one took the offer, the cash was upped to $800. Failing to find any volunteers, the computer chose random passengers.

United over sold the flight.
which actually means they sold something they could not provide.
that’s fraud
I don’t believe they offered him $800 cash. Probably an $800 ticket voucher for future travel. Not quite the same.
Rule 5-G: All of UAs flights are subject to overbooking which could result in UAs inability to provide previously confirmed reserved space for a given flight or for the class of service reserved. For passengers traveling in interstate transportation between points within the United States, subject to the EXCEPTIONS in section d) below, UA shall pay compensation to Passengers denied boarding involuntarily from an Oversold Flight at the rate of 200% of the fare to the Passengers first Stopover or, if none, Destination, with a maximum of 675 USD if UA offers Alternate Transportation that, at the time the arrangement is made, is planned to arrive at the Passengers Destination or first Stopover more than one hour but less than two hours after the planned arrival time of the Passengers original flight. If UA offers Alternate Transportation that, at the time the arrangement is made, is planned to arrive at the Passengers Destination or first Stopover more than two hours after the planned arrival time of the Passengers original flight, UA shall pay compensation to Passengers denied boarding involuntarily from an Oversold Flight at the rate of 400% of the fare to the Passengers first Stopover or, if none, Destination with a maximum of 1350 USD.
"...police dragged the man..."
Failure to plan on YOUR part does not constitute and 'emergency' on MY part. .......................
United Airlines president: “Where’s the doctor who’s supposed to be doing my heart transplant??”
United Airlines employee: “Well......it’s like this....”
Airlines ALWAYS overbook, but to force folks off the plane via law enforcement???? United .. Fly the Ghestapo Skies
You would and I might have as well, but we’re not doctors.................
1. For business travel, I drive to any destination I can reach in one day's drive (15+ hours for me).
2. For personal travel, I drive to any destination I can reach on a paved road.
A few years ago I faced a situation very similar to what the people in this article went through. In my case, the airline didn't even give anyone the option to voluntarily give up their seat. They just picked five random people and told them they were going to get a free night in a local hotel and tickets to a Broadway show that night ... and they'd fly out the next morning.
Most of the people were thrilled to get that deal, but I was living -- because I had to be sitting in a client's office at 8:00 AM the next morning.
THAT would be karma of the highest degree!...................
Give me the money and pay for my rental car and I’ll drive home
You are correct they never offer cash.
As a way too experienced flyer:
1) They offer a company script with so many restrictions you can never use it.
2) It can only be used against the full fair price, which nobody really pays. The amount of the script is never enough to cover the ticket so you end up paying what you normally would for that “free” flight.
They also break guitars.

I said: "That sounds OK. Will you cover a rental car so I can drive from Airport A to Airport B?"
The airline rep. gave me an exasperated look and said: "This airline would fly you from Airport A to Airport C (400 miles away) to Airport B over the course of an entire day before they would cover a rental car for you."
I couldn't believe that nonsense.
And the vid is unbelievable - you’d have thought the guy was a terrorist!
THE VIDEO THEY SHOWED ON GMA THIS MORNING IS GONNA MAKE A GREAT COMMERCIAL!....................FOR THEIR COMPETITORS!....................
I flew United once a few years back because SouthWest didn’t go there, they seem to hate their customers.
Their rule seems to be that travelers will put up with any level of discomfort/ humiliation for cheap fares.
No, I knew right away that it wasn't a terrorist ...
... because they'd never treat a Moslem this way.
Airlines overbook because a certain percentage of passengers don't show. I've worked in offices where executives, uncertain of when they would actually get away, made multiple reservations and cancelled at the last minute on those they didn't use.
The only thing odd about this story is that there were no volunteers for the United offer. I've never seen that happen. I guess when you gotta go to Louisville, you gotta go.
They all offer cash.
