Rahm Emanuel Wants to Withhold Diplomas Until He's Seen Your 'Plans'

Rahm Emanuel needs a few things about America explained to him. For example, "Mayor" is not synonymous with "Dad." And being coerced into doing what the government wants you to do with your life is not so compatible with liberty:

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has proposed a new policy that won't allow students to graduate from high school unless they present a plan to the government on what their post-graduation plans are.

The proposal would require students to prove that they're entering some sort of educational or vocational program after graduation; a job offer or entering the military would also suffice. Exceptions are available in certain cases, such as in the case of illegal immigrant student or those who are in jail.

The proposal still needs to be approved by the city council, but if it is approved Chicago would be the first city to implement this type of policy.

Emmanuel believes what he's doing is what's best for students, stating that he wants to "make sure nobody spikes the ball at 12th grade," and adding: "We want to make 14th grade universal. That’s the new goal line."

To be sure, there's nothing wrong with wanting kids to go to college or some other program. There is a positive correlation between increased education and increased lifetime wages, after all.

No, the problem here is that it's not the government's place to tell legal adults -- most students are either 18 when they graduate or soon will be -- that what they do with their lives must be "approved." It doesn't matter if you have no plans at all. No one can prevent that. And the government absolutely does not have any business knowing that information.

Further, what is this possibly going to accomplish? Nothing.

Kids who are inclined to go to school will still go. Those with no interest will go through whatever hoops they have to go through, then stop. They're not particularly interested in more education, and simply forcing them to go in order to complete high school simply becomes a hurdle to jump over for their diploma.

That is, of course, assuming they actually care about the diploma. How many students only stick around because they're close to completing high school? Now you're going to throw up another roadblock toward that, and a number will just drop out instead of being required to jump through yet another hoop.

And who the hell thinks a government bureaucrat judging these "plan" proposals, by taking that worthless job in the first place, has any expertise in making wise life decisions?

The fact that there's so much nanny-state failure in this isn't difficult to see. But the Left always thinks it knows what's good for you despite causing over a century of disaster, and it isn't giving up any time soon.

That is clearly true. But pretend laws and the corruption to get around them is in our blood in Chicago.

Can’t have that! We, yes I am one, are traitors to the feminist cause. Our numbers cannot be allowed to increase.

How about a voluntary questionnaire instead?
1. What would you like to do as a career?
2. What do you need to do to accomplish that goal?
3. What obstacles do you face?
4. How can you overcome those obstacles?

Far more helpful and liberating.

Or maybe...

Q: What is your plan, Little Johnny? (Johnny is valedictorian)
A: “Well, I’m going to be the first human to land on Mars.”
Q: Don’t be so stupid! Give me something more realistic to put down.
A: “I’se wanna be a big dope pusher and run a string of Ho’s”

The next step is then for government to tell you which job you will have after graduation.

Actually, I think the jerk is right on this one. But it’s only because he and his ilk have undermined the public education system for generations now.

Kids have to think of a future, and they’re never told to do that...in fact, poor people do it less than anybody else, because while in the US there is no limit to your aspirations based on your class, race or anything else, in their minds there is a limit. They want to stay stuck in the ghetto or in the double wide in the woods because they don’t know anything else and they’re scared and there’s a lot of downward pressure (both poor blacks and poor whites are heavy TV watchers) so they don’t even think their kids can move beyond being on welfare, in and out of jail, having kids out of wedlock and expecting the state to be daddy, etc.

Give them a positive plan for the future. And they won’t do it unless they have to, unfortunately.

This is probably the first time in my life I have ever agreed with Emanuel.

It is very hard for a proven crack-pot to rise above being a crack-pot.

I'm sure Rahm (nanny-state) Emanuel is sure he knows what's best for us all.

Won't disagree with that; however, let me take the other side of the larger issue.

Most of us have no idea of what it must be like to live in certain parts of Chicago's culture. Most of those "kids", especially those who lack effective parenting, are moved through the system like cattle are moved through the stockyards. They have little or no idea of the opportunities that await them, or of the realities they face.

In fact, I would recommend that each student be required to meet with their counselor during the freshman year for the express purpose of start work on a four-year plan ("mission statement"). Annual reviews and applicable adjustments would also keep the counselors accountable in a meaningful way for the student's accomplishments.

This is crazy. I’d be willing to wager that this ridiculous scheme will cause the dropout rate to increase.

Actually, it may not be a bad idea for kids to have to write an essay or put together some other presentation on what their plans for the future are. It will make them think about it and it can be graded. But it should all be within the school itself.

Curious to know what percent of students [enrolled as frosh] actually graduate from HS in Chicago?

I would venture to guess that these kids are functionally illiterate, and unable to *write* a plan.

This will be decried as raciss.

So Rahmiekins will have no more than a dozen *plans* to review. Meh.

I couldn’t agree more, that’s what high school counselors are there for.

Mayors of cities are not there to deny diplomas to students.
