Following the massive influx of migrants during the fall of 2015, the buzzword of the year was “gutmensch,” which is often translated as do-gooder. “The term was often used pejoratively to describe those people who cheerfully welcomed migrants to Germany without considering any of the potential costs or drawbacks,” explains a column at Deutsche Welle.
There appear to have been plenty of Gutmenschen in the German-speaking press ever since the start of the migrant crisis, as their code of conduct often serves as a repressive, self-regulating means that keeps the reality of the European rape epidemic under wraps.
German media is largely self-regulated by the German Press Council, an amalgamation of different journalistic unions formed in the 1950s. Its standards prohibit outlets from identifying the nationality, immigration status, or religion of an accused rapist.
