The facial recognition database used by the FBI is out of control, according to a new report by The Guardian. Approximately half of adult Americans photographs are stored in facial recognition databases that can be accessed by the FBI, without their knowledge or consent, in the hunt for suspected criminals, reported The Guardian on Monday. About 80% of photos in the FBIs network are non-criminal entries, including pictures from drivers licenses and passports. The algorithms used to identify matches are inaccurate about 15% of the time, and are more likely to misidentify black people than white people.
These are just some of the damning facts presented at last weeks House oversight committee hearing, where politicians and privacy campaigners criticized the FBI and called for stricter regulation of facial recognition technology at a time when it is creeping into law enforcement and business, they continued.
During the committee hearing, chairman Jason Chaffetz praised the positives of using facial recognition technology before also raising concerns about some of the more negative potential uses.
Facial recognition technology is a powerful tool law enforcement can use to protect people, their property, our borders, and our nation But it can also be used by bad actors to harass or stalk individuals, declared Chaffetz. It can be used in a way that chills free speech and free association by targeting people attending certain political meetings, protests, churches, or other types of places in the public.
For those reasons and others, we must conduct proper oversight of this emerging technology, he continued, adding that body cameras with the potential to scan faces while walking down the street were the most concerning.

Can protect our borders ... Lost at that big lie
They might as well make a giant YEARBOOK for every town as a community service.
My how far we have come in the last sixty years!
I remember back then when law enforcement demanded a small town have everyone fingerprinted to try and catch a local murderer.
To get everyone on board, they were promised that all the fingerprints would be destroyed after the case was closed. They then burned them.
Now they have your fingerprints, DNA, facial recognition, voice, and who knows what else to check you out! There is no privacy anymore!
The government really likes crime because it gives it an excuse to monitor and control citizens.
In most states it is illegal to hide your face via mask or makeup while in public. Just saying, not agreeing.
Not to mention budgets.
Too hot in the summer, doesn't mess up the computer enough, and makes liberals happy. Try this instead:
Important note: this software was first developed at Arizona State University, and was tested, without their knowledge or consent, on those who attended football games.
But the designers of this lucrative federal contract soon realized that there was something some fans did that utterly confused and defeated the facial recognition software: to wear face paint. The fans did this to support their teams.
So ASU immediately prohibited the use of face paint at football games, as being “racially insensitive”.
I guess against those ethnic minorities that are green, purple, orange, or have stripes or polka dots.
However, in turn this points the way to solving this problem. As paint exists that inhibit or distorts photographs, but are otherwise visually invisible.
That’s really interesting, thanks for the info.
I do not like it, but, somehow, I do not think there is an ‘expectation of privacy’ for your face, esp. if you have ever posted a photo on the net.
Approximately half of adult Americans photographs are stored in facial recognition databases ... in the hunt for suspected criminals,
= = =
And the other half are criminals in hiding, as evidenced by this very fact.
Aren't there license plate covers that are visually clear looking, but have baffles that make them unreadable to cameras or scanning devices?
Probably everything we read(see) and hear electronically as well.
You may still have the right to remain silent however anything you have ever said, seen, heard or done will eventually be used against you in a kangaroo court of law
Things really started to go sideways when a “right” to privacy was discovered in the (penumbras of the) constitution.
any lawyers here...???
how about a class action lawsuit
against FACEBOOK
and FIOA REQUEST ON WHERE DID THE FBI GET THE PHOTOS...
facebook is assbook for fools...
Add to that the increasing number of DNA samples being VOLUNTARILY being submitted for genealogy, racial composition, and “health” tracking and......voila!

Well, there are a lot of things that are illegal in a lot of places. Unless you're a member of some 'protected class', which appears to include members of a certain religion, the name of which shall remain unnamed as the religion of peace...
Have I mentioned that I'm a guy? (and would wearing a burka mean that I'm trans-muslimed, or something?) Might be nice to be a member of TWO protected classes...
Want one! LOL!
