Top Senate Dem Opposes Supreme Court Pick, Vows Filibuster

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Senate Democrat said Thursday he will oppose President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee and lead a filibuster of the choice, setting up a politically charged showdown with Republicans with far-reaching implications for future judicial nominees.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer criticized Judge Neil Gorsuch, saying he “almost instinctively favors the powerful over the weak” and would not serve as a check on Trump or be a mainstream justice.

“I have concluded that I cannot support Neil Gorsuch’s nomination,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “My vote will be no and I urge my colleagues to do the same.”

Shortly before Schumer’s announcement, Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, who faces re-election next year in a state Trump won, also announced his opposition. Casey said he had “serious concerns about Judge Gorsuch’s rigid and restrictive judicial philosophy, manifest in a number of opinions he has written on the 10th Circuit.”

Not because Chuck Schumer is uniquely even less amenable to reason and logic, but that he is in a position of leadership to demand other Democrats to follow his lead, backing it up with threats of retaliation for non-conformity.

Obviously this is out of principle:

Thousands of angry demonstrators gathered outside Sen. Chuck Schumer’s luxury Brooklyn apartment building — holding up signs and chanting “What the f–k, Chuck?!” — to protest his lukewarm stance on President Trump’s cabinet picks.“He works for us. We need him to be bold. We need him to stand up to Trump and oppose his picks,” Wolchansky said.

If the situation were reversed Obama would get on TV and point this out and say he feels sorry for the opposition leader would be McConnell) having crazies in his party protesting,

Where are you on this Trump? Please Tweet.

don't want to say this out loud. We might be better off if the majority is forced to use the nuclear option now. Then the perpetually outraged can't argue against it for the next nomination

Schumer has competition for that award....there's McCain, Collins, Franken, Flake, Cochran, Blumenthal.... It's gotten so bad, across the political spectrum, that the HOR members seem more capable of expressing a point of view.

I could make exceptionally good and efficient use of five-to-ten seconds alone in a room with Cuck Scummer. One of us would walk out, and the other, well...

"...and would not serve as a check on Trump..."

Sorry Chuck, but I'm certain that "serving as a check" on the President is not part of job description for Justice of the SCOTUS.

I just sent off emails to both my Senator’s, one a rubber stamp Democrat up for re-election and the other a mainstream Republican.
Both notes are polite, short, and to the point.
Confirm Gorsuch this week.
No filibuster if you want me to vote Dem. ever again.
Use the nuclear option if necessary.

I am hearing the some no named nothing Rino Senator in pennsylvania named Casey (?) is against Gorsuch? No reason— just against him. We need to drive these traitors completely out of our party. This has become incompatible.

Has McConnell asked Trump to withdraw the nomination yet and re-nominate Garland? Or is he too focused on destroying health care to bow down to Schumer right now? /sarc

Its all bluster until it happens.
I don’t believe the Dems have the guts to filibuster now.

But, if they do, they will have picked the wrong time to fight this battle, given such a perfect nominee.

It would mean they have no place to stand and fight on any future Trump nominee.

I predict Kennedy (81 in July) will retire by his birthday, and Ginsberg (84) will be gone within a year.

I like this no-nuke strategy. Let the Dems filibuster. While that continues. Trump holds rallies in the states where those 10 Dem senators live until the filibuster stops.

If he gets to ten, then push the button.

Saying the “pottery barn rule” applies to healthcare is fair - if the Republicans break it, they own it.

But Schumer must be really desperate to risk the nuclear option. Because if Republicans use it, there won’t be any store left to shop at the next time.
