(Full article title: Mexican teen’s family awarded $1 million after he died from drinking liquid meth on border officers' demand)

Cruz Velazquez Acevedo made a catastrophic split second decision after border officers found two bottles of liquid on him when he attempted to cross into California from Mexico.

The 16-year-old Mexican national told the two officers that the bottles contained "apple juice," but they didn't buy it and asked Acevedo to take a sip to "prove" he wasn't lying, according to court records.

He took a swig.

Minutes later, Acevedo began sweating and screaming in Spanish about "the chemicals."

"My heart! My heart!" he blurted out, according to records.

Roughly two hours later, Acevedo was dead, his heart no longer pumping because of the liquid Methamphetamine he had just ingested.

His time of death was 8:57 p.m., Nov. 18, 2013.

Now, over three years later, Acevedo's family has been awarded $1 million after settling a wrongful-death lawsuit against the U.S. government and the two border officers, according to records.

The officers, Adrian Perallon and Valerie Baird, admitted in testimony they suspected that the liquid in Acevedo's bottles wasn't apple juice. Nonetheless, they "coerced and intimidated" him into taking a "big sip," according to the family's initial complaint.

Perallon and Baird remain employed with the Customs and Border Protection Agency in San Diego and were never disciplined for the fatal incident, according to the family's lawyer, Eugene Iredale.

Doesn’t say if a jury did this.

Sounds like a logical reason. If it was apple juice drink it. So, it wasn’t apple juice. Choices have a consequence, the Border Guard did no wrong.

I tried to get on a plane with a vending machine cup of Dr. Pepper that I had just bought. The TSA lady said....drink it. And I did. And I thanked her for saying that. I felt she had protected me from some some crazed passenger bringing something nasty on board.

Who gave these horrid failing parents a million of our tax dollars for raising a kid so stupid he drank liquid meth rather than tell the truth?

If the man knew it wasn’t apple juice, he should have admitted it.

Not taken a swig of raw chemicals.

A sample of the “apple juice” dropped into some bleach would have saved a lot of money instead of making an ignorant 16-year-old kid drink it.

Doesn’t the Border Patrol have test kits to detect common drugs? This is incrediblly amateurish.

Yeah right, Mexican parents. Your son being a drug mule had nothing to do w/ him dying.

Bad choices frequently lead to bad consequences. Especially the criminal choices.

I dunno. If the BP cops suspected it was something deadly dangerous, they shouldn’t have intimidated the kid into drinking it. Did the kid even know what it was?

I really don’t want law enforcement personnel acting as random executioners.

And if the apple juice had been a different chemical, then there could have been an explosion. Or everyone could have breathing Phosgene gas.

Asking a suspect to drink a suspicious liquid is a far safer test than impromptu chemistry experiments on a hot day.

Wait, so an illegal alien trying to smuggle illegal drugs across the border kills himself with his own drugs and we have to pay his survivors for his criminal behavior and stupidity? There’s no doubt that the border guards were also idiots for asking him to drink his concoction instead of simply arresting him and having the liquid taken away for analysis, but paying criminals for the consequences of their criminal actions is preposterous.

This was a much quicker way to see what it was. The kid knew what he was carrying. Could have just confessed and surrendered the bottles for later testing. Stupid kit. Dead kid. At least no American kids died from what was in those bottles. The proper entity to sue was the manufacturer of the drug. There should have been warning labels on the bottles. Doesn’t Mexico have an FDA? Stupid beaners.

Oh, I would say he did. And he was bringing it in so other people could put it in their bodies.

Stupid kid thought he was immortal when he was just immoral.

His heroism made his parents very wealthy.

All this time, they assumed their boy was a loser drug peddler. Turned out he was good for something after all.

“Minutes later, Acevedo began sweating and screaming in Spanish about “the chemicals.” “

“Oh, I would say he did.”

I would say he found out. How many “doses” of meth did he ingest?

“Stupid kid thought he was immortal when he was just immoral.”

Stupid kid might have had information that would have allowed them to roll up some of the network. Stupid kid might have been just that - stupid.
