I’ve got two USMC vets working for me. Anyhow have you ever signed the front of a paycheck? Do you have any idea what your’re talking about?

The point of this thread is illegals and H-2 temp visa workers and not full time workers. You are crossing signals.

Those USMC guys are they ethnic Mexican/latino?

Oh Bull Sh!t. Central Va is full of American colleges and high schools with kids willing to work for $20.00/hr.

They are willing to get paid $20, but work? Not so much.

You have obviously never been exposed to professional farm laborers.

Getting in these crops require hard work in very short periods of time at a price that makes economic sense.

Oh Bull Sh!t. $20.00/hr is fine. They don't want to hire Americans and go against the Mexican Mafia.

The Anti American bigots on this thread can KMA.

It doesn’t matter if other employers legally hire them. The media will act as if the Trumps are the only one’s hire those folks and imply Trump lied about not wanting to hire foreigners.

Maybe it’s time to reform our prison system and use low risk inmates for those willing to work the fields for reduced sentences. More automation maybe?

That actually came from PET’s immediate predecessor as Prime Minister, Lester Pearson. The Canada Assistance Plan Act of 1966 basically centralized social welfare policy (a year earlier, federal Medicare or socialized medicine was created). Under the Act, the federal government imposed it’s own standards for welfare policy on the provinces (for example, British Columbia could no longer impose residency requirements for recipients and Quebec’s long standing local traditions on social welfare were also imposed on). Most significantly, the Act eliminated the specific types of persons who could collect public assistance (most jurisdictions only allowed the blind, the widowed, abandoned mothers, etc to collect) and that welfare was made that much more generous (in many cases it just used to be coupons for food and clothing).

This legislation had many unfortunate consequences. The separatist Parti Quebecois was created in 1968 and that undoubtedly was partly in reaction to the big intrusions on social policy, which had of course been the domain of the provinces (especially Quebec) since Confederation in 1867. It has also been said that making welfare far more easier to get had that sort of an adverse impact on families when coupled with the divorce laws (specifically the creation of no fault divorce) being made more permissive and this was authored by Trudeau the First when he was our Justice Minister in 1967.

These heroes of agriculture don’t even try to get locals to work for them. It’s a racket. I live 5 miles from a huge vineyard in VA and they never advertise for workers and somehow it all gets picked.

I wasn't aware that the University of Virginia and your local high schools would let their students skip class for 2-3 weeks to pick fruit for 80 hours a week.

50% of RNs in NC make 58k or less per year many with Bachelor Degrees. Do you really think someone who tends grapes should earn within about 7 dollars an hour of an RN?

Not everyone goes to school full time and there are weekends. A lot of people would work for the wage if givin the opportunity. The way it works a crew has a middle man that farms out their labor. Sure the labor is $20/hr but the honcho pockets probably half of it.

I see, it’s the unions driving up the price of food, not the growers. Got it!

Not going to win friends and influence people calling us names.

You want to go after Disney for firing tech workers and replacing with foreigners? I'm with you.

You want a 50 foot wall? I'm with you.

You want to make it illegal to hire an illegal? I'm with you.

You want to cut off welfare to illegals? I'm with you.

But I'd rather your students learn how to build a machine that would eliminate migrant labor than to try and do a crappy job which will probably leave them with life-long injuries.

thanks. decent wage.
not knowing nothing from nothing or any ins or outs,
I always wondered why the unions didn’t start sponsoring immigrants.(I’m glad they didn’t)
Had they done it right,(Like Pullman did in the 1880s)the the immigrants would be citizens and Democrats. Maybe wages wouldn’t be undercut so much.
Keep pluggin away...Good luck

You seem to imply it’s an impossibility to hire Americans to work these fields. It’s not. In CA there are farmlands larger than the state of Virginia, and yet I never see them advertising these jobs at a livable wages in CA either.

Actually you’ve probably never seen them advertize for those jobs at all.

Nope. How would they know they can’t find Americans if they fail to even advertise these jobs?

The Mexican Mafia picks our fruit and veggies. Don’t mess with them. An American couldn’t get a picker job even if they wanted too. A complete lock out.

In 60s and 70s in CA, roofers and concrete men were making big $$. Most were white and young. They had little problem filling jobs.

Now? roofers are illegals and are making 1990s wages.
