Fixing New Haven would involve REAL mental work. And even worse, failure at that task would be obvious. To even “try” would risk a judgment of failure. And that would violate the bureaucrats’ First Directive: CYA.

It is SO much easier for Yale’s self-perpetuating academic grandees to display their power by whimsically changing the “definitions” of a few helpless words.

good enough for Harry Potter!

I'll text my Brit daughter in law, now a naturalized U.S. Citizen about "First Year" traditions.

First-year, second-year, third-year, and fourth-year are used at the University of Virginia. It’s a very traditional thing there. In UVA’s case, it’s not done to avoid the terrors evoked by use of a term containing the letters “m-a-n.”

The freshman year of college should teach the little crumb crunchers not to be big babies that are offended by mere words.

Especially since it comes from root words which can be loosely translated as “wise fool”, quite accurate for many second year know-it-alls.

What if you are a student who has completed your first two semesters at Yale but have not done well enough to pass enough credits to be considered a sophomore. Wouldn’t being still called “First Year” when you are actually there for your second year be extremely offensive to you?

Since language usage is discriminatory, freshman and all other words should be dropped in favor of meaningless noises. Meaning is also oppressive, so all Yale students and staff must enter a permanent vegetative state, and I don’t mean just Connecticut.

At my alma mater, Virginia, students have always been first-year, second-year, etc., even when it was all-male (before 1970).

University of Virginia has used “first” “second” year, etc. roughly since Tom Jefferson founded the place.

Freshperson is no good because it has “son” in it.
This will never stop. After this they will discover something else that shocks their sensitive ears.

Eloi now and forever!

Just so long as we remember that the Eloi, both Mr. Wells' fictional ones and the former Elis, are nothing but food for the Moorloks.

The University of Virginia has used the “First Year”, “Second Year”, etc. nomenclature for decades...
