Editorial: Mexican border policy on kids is harsh yet ineffective
Boston Globe ^ | March 13, 2017 | Editorial

The Trump Administration seems determined to devise new forms of bureaucratic cruelty for immigrants: The latest policy proposal from the Department of Homeland Security would separate children from their parents at the US-Mexico border if they’re caught trying to enter the country together illegally. The policy is intended as a deterrent, but the plan is bound to backfire, swamping agencies with children while doing nothing to address the root cause of migration. It would be both diabolical and ineffective.

Under the current policy, parents (usually mothers) and their children caught at the border who want to apply for asylum are released together, following a court ruling stating that minors can’t be held in detention. But the administration is considering a new policy that would separate them. The mother would go into an adult detention facility under DHS jurisdiction, while the Office of Refugee Resettlement under the Department of Health and Human Services would take custody of the child.

It’s an appalling, inhumane idea. And it would create - deliberately - a new wave of unaccompanied kids that the government would need to shelter, feed, and educate.

Such a dehumanizing policy would likely push many of the migrants fleeing from violence into more dangerous situations, with smugglers charging them more money to use far more treacherous crossing routes and exposing them to more horrors and potential abuse. Concerted US investment in stability and economic growth in Central America, rather than building walls and hiring more border agents, will do much more to reduce the flow of migrants at the southern border.

Deport every last one. Mom, Dad, kids, aunts, uncles, papa and grandma. End anchor baby policy. Cut all funding for sanctuary cities. Eliminate all social benefits. Immediate deportation for VISA overstays. eVerify all employees. Stiff penalties for employers hiring illegals. Provide only enough medical care sufficient to survive deportation.

And why is it the U.S.’s responsibility to address the root causes of migration? The problem is in the country which the migrant is seeking to leave.

while doing nothing to address the root cause of migration.

Socialism, Communism, Islam, Dictatorships, Oligarchy,... NOBODY can fix the root cause but the People of these Tur World COuntries, when they rise up and Overthrow their Dictators, then and only then will there be hope for them.

Until Then STAY IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY, We do NOT want or Need you.

We cannot be responsible for the “root cause of migration” in all of the various countries throughout the world. We can only be responsible to protect our country. Having sealed borders allows us some protection.

First stop all welfare, food stamps to any families that are not headed by at least ONE legal American parent.

Do that and most all would leave on their own not being able to afford to live here.

The more I find out, the more I learn most are on welfare and the same for those who got their green card. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT IN THIS FOR US?

“The Trump Administration seems determined to devise new forms of bureaucratic cruelty for immigrants”

Um... I pretty sure the author us actually referring to “illegal” immigrants. Or perhaps the differentiation is lost in the American liberal mindset.

Our welfare state and their access to it is the reason they come.

You don’t hear of all these hard workers coming who pay all of their taxes legit, you hear they work under the table or with fraudulent SS numbers.
Almost all access our welfare.

Pull the welfare plug and they can’t afford to work here.

Agreed. The entire family should be deported together (after fingerprinting). IF they return, they should be incarcerated together for a few years before being deported together again. Let’s keep families together.

Anyone caught at the border should be turned around immediately and placed back on their own side of the border.

No exceptions. You have a visa or you don’t. Period.

True fact: one of the main selling points for NAFTA was that it would reduce emigration to the USA — because so many good jobs would be created in Mexico. (How’s that working out?)

Let’s just forget about the cruelty done to the American people by allowing a foreign country to invade their own.

I am so not into “root causes”. The law is not designed to address “root causes”. When you go through a red light, you get a ticket and in most cases are stuck paying the fine regardless of what kind of good reasons you have. SHould you rob a bank, the court *may* consider the root cause of your breaking the law but you are gonna serve some time no matter what. And lib newspapers aren’t into root causes either. Their circulation and subscription numbers are plummeting. They are plummeting because they cannot be trusted to accurately report the news. So instead of changing their modus so they start reporting accurately, they double down on their fake news schtick. So they don’t give a crap about root causes themselves.

That's a darned good point.

Enough said! Sick of this BS! This country will not survive being a third world toilet nor a welfare state. Take one look at culturally, socially, politically and demographically destroyed California (once arguably the greatest American states by many measures) and that is America’s future.

What’s really bad is that most are earning money paid under the table, for which they pay no taxes, and then getting welfare money on top of that since their income is invisible. Many live better than the average American because of this.

In California we pay $15,000 a year for each student in school.

A family of 5 costs like that costs us almost $60,000 - $100,000 each.
