Turkeys are omnivorous, meaning they will eat a wide range of foods but pretty much eat nuts, seeds and fruits. They also don't usually eat dead animals.
Wildlife biologist Mark Hatfield told Gizmodo that the birds were probably just sizing up the cat. 'They're just making sure that it's no longer a threat,' Mr Hatfield said.

The best post I read on DM for this story was:
This is commonly referred to as a ‘Cat Scan’.
Wild turkeys will eat the eggs and young of ground nesting birds, like quail.
I have a free cat for anyone who wants him...but he’s still alive.
duck duck cat?
I posted that pic on a ebay forum a few years ago, the cat ladies went ballistic on me. LOL
“I think they’re playing “Who Will Touch It First To See If It’s Really Dead”.”
Just a thought, but maybe hunters could use this tactic. Lieon the ground until the turkeys start to circle and then POUNCE!
Well there was this farmer and his rooster had just passed away, and all of his hens were sad and depressed. They were so depressed that they would not lay any eggs. So the farmer said, I am going to have to find a new rooster.
So the farmer set out and bought a new rooster. He put the rooster in the chicken pen and suddenly the rooster mounted a hen then another then another. The farmer was amazed and said, Youre going to have to slow down or youll kill yourself!
After the rooster had finished with the hens the rooster started to mount all the barnyard animals. He mounted the cows, the goats, sheep, rabbits, pigs, horses, and even the dog.
Well that night the farmer went to bed and the rooster was still mounting animals. The farmer told him to quit or he was going to die.
Well the next morning came and the old farmer saw the rooster laying on the ground with his tongue hanging out motionless on the ground.
The old farmer walked over and said I told you to quit.
The rooster then sat up and pointed in the sky saying, SHHhhh, Buzzards.
that’s a good one. until I read the end I figured the joke was going to be the rooster was really a turkey :)
I have see turkeys do that with live cats!
I have many dozens/hundreds of wild turkeys on my property and have seen them surround a cat and drive them out of the area.
Cats prey on young turkeys, but they fear large flocks of them.
Pelosi is the lead turkey in the pack and them turkeys are scumbag Democrats circling their latest victim. This week it’s Sessions. Last week it was Milo.
The turkeys left plenty of room to swing a dead cat.
They do it to raccoons and rattlesnakes, too.
They follow them along until they are sure they are well away from their nesting areas and poults.
I see that you’re from MI, also.
Around here it’s my cat who rounds up flocks of turkeys and literally herds them out of HIS yard.
Really a hoot to watch.
When I told my daughter about my round-up cat, she informed me that kitty’s uncle chased DEER out of her yard and she had video to prove it.
