Church, State, and Melania Trump
American Thinker ^ | February 22, 2017 | Daniel John Sobieski

Those who have made a career of trying to drive all vestiges of religion from the public square, from manger scenes at Christmas to mentioning God in the Pledge of Allegiance, were not happy when First Lady Melania Trump recited the Lord’s Prayer at her husband’s rally in Florida. The tolerant left mocked the accent of a woman and an immigrant who speaks five languages. They moaned that it was an affront to those who are not Christian. And they brought out that old canard about the separation of church and state.

We have not seen such outrage since former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow took a knee in thanksgiving on the football field, scorned by a liberal elite that applauds the ungrateful Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand during the national anthem. Neither Tim Tebow or Melania Trump by their actions are violating the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of religion, not freedom from it. As Investor’s Business Daily editorialized those opposed to the free expression of religion and free speech get the establishment clause and church and state thing all wrong:

It’s an indication of far we’ve drifted as a Christian society when people make such a big deal out of Tim Tebow’s taking the knee. Mark Bavaro of the Giants did it often in the late 80’s and no one batted an eye.

she could have a big photo of George Soros behind her on a screen and quote Revelation 3:9. That would get a lot of interesting comments

The so-called ‘Separation of Church and State’ concept is an invalid tenet that misrepresents what the US Constitution says about the government and religion.

If its proponents keep insisting in its rigid misinterpretation, then I suggest we start agreeing with them vehemently! “Separation of Islam and State.” Complete removal of all traces from Islam and its support throughout our entire federal, state and local governments.

How to Respond to “Separation of Church and State” by David Barton is a followup to his classic Separation of Church and State article which says:

The “separation” phrase so frequently invoked today was rarely mentioned by any of the Founders; and even Jefferson’s explanation of his phrase is diametrically opposed to the manner in which courts apply it today. “Separation of church and state” currently means almost exactly the opposite of what it originally meant.

And it might be the only time a liberal has ever seen a bible verse in his life.

The First Amendment only prohibits Congress from passing laws regarding the establishment of religion. The states are free to do what they want. Whether it would be wise for a state to establish a religion is questionable but it would be Constitutional.

And they brought out that old canard about the separation of church and state.

Specious arguments notwithstanding, I believe a check of the records will show that Melania Trump is not an elected official in any capacity. Therefore - she's a private citizen and can say what she wants.

Praying as Jesus instructed. Good for her.

It’s notable how some religious social clubs don’t bother with such formalities and teachings anymore.

That was originally true before the Civil War - the 14th Amendment changed it by extending and applying the guarantees of the federal BOR to the states.

State governments are now subject to the same restrictions as those originally imposed only on the federal government.

That said, the First Amendment only says Congress and via the 14th Amendment incorporation clause - state legislatures may not establish a state church.

Apart from that, it leaves private citizens free to follow their faith by preventing the government from impeding its free exercise.

Melania Trump was exercising her First Amendment right to express her religious faith. That’s the American vision of religious freedom.

Most state constitutions used the federal one as a template. In some cases, almost word for word.

Most Americans and no Snowflakes know that the separation of church and State wording in the Constitution merely forbids the creation of single govt church. It was expressly intended to eliminate the creation of the British Anglican church in the US. It does not forbid prayer in the classroom or anywhere else.

We have over the past 60 years or so allowed a handful of Atheists to strike Christianity from our public domain. Time to push back.

Bogus interpretation by the Supreme Court. The 14th Amendment says nothing of the kind.

Indeed. We have to use their tactics, though I think. Make them disavow that so-called religion of Islam and remove all traces of its public impact. Good start, I’d say.....
