There was once a referendum in California that passed, denying any government benefits to illegal immigrants. A federal judge overturned it.
So, by “immigrant” do we mean non-US citizen getting US monetary benefits?
Okay, I stopped understanding here. First the WaPo says that Trump is planning to deport immigrants on welfare. Then the WaPo says immigrants, by law, are not on welfare.
Let me help you out, California has their Very Own Special Welfare Program just for Illegal Aliens, I would bet the other States in question have the same.
I know Canada, UK and Mexico have laws saying some version of “if you want to here, you have to be able to support yourself, add to society etc..”. I am sure most other countries have similar laws.
Do we? If so, can he just ensure they are enforced?
If he is able to do this, he will have gone beyond what I realistically expected him to do and will be in the territory of fulfilling some of my fondest political dreams.

Reminds me of The Santa Clause 2: The new Santa went back to the rule book and started enforcing what was already written. Unintended consequences resulted in everyone getting coal that year. This is kinda like that... only in a good way!!!
My wife is a naturalized legal immigrant that emigrated to the US in 2004. The documents for the immigration process clearly state that the immigrant is in no ways to become a public charge. I had to present three years of tax returns to the US Embassy to prove it.
We need to stop families with illegals as parents accessing the system through anchor children.

Milton Friedman once said that you can have open borders, or you can have a welfare state. But you can’t have both. Europe is beginning to see that.
There was a bit of a local dust up a few years ago. Illegal immigrant parents couldn’t get into public schools to see teachers and administrators about their kids, because you need ID to get into public schools. I have to present ID to go into schools to give Junior Achievement presentations.
I don’t know how they resolved it. I would resolve it by decreeing that you need to be here legally to get any government benefits, including public schools.

Cut off welfare to noncitizens and federal funds to any state or county that does not comply and most would self deport!
