Immigrants have been ineligible (supposedly) for welfare for a long time. Prop 187 proposed to deny public schools and health services. In my youth, I knew guys from Mexico that worked over here, saved their money, and then went home to their families and lived well in Mexico until they would come back k to work again for awhile on farms and ranches.
when they made it mandatory to provide education, healthcare and other services to illegals then those guys just moved their families here at the taxpayer’s expense.
I wonder if this would apply to the recent influx of Middle Eastern refugees or if there is some exception for them.
Democrats and the media say immigrants on welfare are as rare as illegal voting. So this is a waste of time. /sarc
We do, it just hasn’t been enforced. In places where it is enforced, the social workers have been instructed to not ask for documentation and/or documentation candidate be bought by the illegals for a few bucks.
Milton Friedman once said that you can have open borders, or you can have a welfare state. But you can’t have both. Europe is beginning to see that.
There was a bit of a local dust up a few years ago. Illegal immigrant parents couldn’t get into public schools to see teachers and administrators about their kids, because you need ID to get into public schools. I have to present ID to go into schools to give Junior Achievement presentations.
I don’t know how they resolved it. I would resolve it by decreeing that you need to be here legally to get any government benefits, including public schools.

Canada has stricter rules than we do.
Immigrants must be able to work and make a positive contribution to Canadian society.
Those who can’t are deported.
Much of the illegal and legal immigration would dry up if this rule was enforced and those here would leave of their own accord.

Obama ran out of money for all the benefits giving to the unaccompanied minors rushing over her so he took money out of the budgets for health and other services meant for citizens to the tune of 167 million a month.
Cut off welfare to noncitizens and federal funds to any state or county that does not comply and most would self deport!

The 1994 (or 1996) Welfare Reform Bill signed into law by then Pres. Bill Clinton, specifically forbade illegal aliens (now known as mere “immigrants”) from receiving government benefits of any kind. Even Obama claimed illegals would not qualify for Obamacare, though like all else in that law was a sham and filled with verifiable lies, or so Jonathan Gruber bragged !
They are talking about legal immigrants. Even legal immigrants by law are not supposed to be able to access our welfare programs. It is not enforced at the county level which disburses said welfare programs. If they are here legally they get aid.
If this is true, Trump just wants the laws enforced.
