Passengers from Iraq, Yemen barred from NYC-bound flight after Trump refugee ban

Five Iraqi passengers and one Yemeni were barred from boarding an EgyptAir flight from Cairo to New York on Saturday following President Donald Trump’s ban on the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, sources at Cairo airport said.

Trump on Friday put a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the United States and temporarily barred travelers from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries, saying the moves would help protect Americans from terrorist attacks.

The six passengers, bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport, were prevented from boarding EgyptAir Flight 985 at Cairo airport despite holding valid immigration visas, the sources said.

The five Iraqis had arrived in transit from Erbil and were being held at the airport until they could be re-boarded on flights back to Iraq, whereas the Yemeni passenger had arrived at the airport from elsewhere in Cairo, they added.

JUMPING FOR JOY..!!

Mines are probably too much to hope for, but when I see the barbed wire I think tears of joy will well up in my eyes.

I have to wonder how much misery, how much abuse, how many lives have just been saved here? Beyond measure, I am thinking. We owe God a debt of profound debt of gratitude.

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday titled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.” Following is the language of that order, as supplied by the White House.

Can the ‘The Press’ be far behind racing to catch up with those poor, pathetic, rejected, travelers for heartbreaking interviews?

Maybe ‘Foxes Own’ Herwaldo is on a plane as we type.

So Angela Merkel will tell Trump today.....

what a terrible policy....sure wish I had thought of it....instead of "favoring" Muslims cuz we have a mess on our hands.

Russia?? We're the real losers in the sanctions but I have to play the game.

I love this man!!!

As someone who witnessed 9/11 in person, and have watched at a distance the murder of Christmas celebrants, gay partiers, and good soldiers, this is my new year resolution come true!

Thank you, President Trump!

If the story is correct in the details, this is a mistake. These people already held valid visas for U.S. entry. They were complying with the law. People should not show up at the airport with a plane ticket and a valid U.S. visa only to find that the visa has been canceled without notification.

Scale does make a difference. If very large numbers of people are in this situation, I am open to reconsidering, but I will hazard a guess that there are perhaps only a few hundred people, and perhaps fewer, in this bind. These are negligible numbers. (If Obama went on a visa binge in the last weeks of his administration and gave visas to half of Jihadistan, that would be a different matter.) People will have made significant life choices and perhaps expended significant amounts of money on the naive belief that the U.S. government honored its commitments. The equity issue aside, arbitrary cancellation of an important document with no prior notification is an unforced error that gives opponents of the policy change compelling ammunition.

Please understand that I favor Trump's policy change going forward. And it should be broadened; I am in favor of sharply lower levels of total immigration and stringent control of the borders. BUT: retroactivity is a bad business. Policy changes that impose serious negative effects on individuals and businesses should be made prospectively, not retroactively. Someone who has a valid U.S. visa should be able to trust it. If there are good reasons for canceling visas, there should at least be a reasonable notification period. Someone should not close out all his affairs in his home country and show up at the airport, suitcase and ticket in hand, and find out his perfectly legal paperwork is no good.
