Charleston could have had a Trump hotel in the middle of its tourist district.
Developer Michael Bennett recalled an unforgettable business offer from the future 45th president of the United States during a ceremony Thursday for the 179-room Hotel Bennett he's building next to Marion Square.
Im not going to talk any politics, but Donald Trump sent his son to see me two years ago," Bennett told a crowd that included former Mayor Joe Riley, construction and hospitality workers and dozens of community leaders.

Forgot to add that this was the paper’s lead front page article today.
For a throw-away article, it’s not worthy of Front Page on FR.
Yep, terrible headline. This Mr. Bennett sure might not appreciate being made to look anti-Trump.
Fake news.
After reading the article, I understand why Mr. Bennet refused Don Jr.’s offer of a takeover. It would be just like Donald Sr. to someday build a similar hotel right across the street, with many of the same special features plus more. A Price War would begin right after the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
It’s the American Way!
Actually there are plenty of stories about our President during his days as a tough real estate developer. I know some first hand. They were all moot when Donald Trump showed his political chops in a completely different manner than when he was a developer.
As he elected to become a public servant, he displayed his true opinions on issues, took them to the people and ran over all comers. Would we evaluate Joe Biden based upon his failed plagiaristic Presidential candidacy of two decades ago? No, he had failures enough as V.P.
Munday, Munday, can’t trust that Dave...
Very clever!
I saw what you did there :-)
It took 10 years of expensive court battles, including a ruling by the South Carolina Supreme Court, before Bennett could build in the historic district. Obviously this project was more than just money.
Bennett: “His son (Donald Jr.) was as polite a man as you’ve ever met,” he said. “If any of us raised a child like that ... he said, ‘yes, sir’ and no, sir.’”
But Bennett was not about to sell what he views as his family’s legacy.
This hotel is named not after me,” he said. “This hotel is named after my mother and father.
His late father shined shoes in downtown Charleston during the Great Depression. His mother, Virginia, was born on America Street, worked downtown and was the inspiration for Virginia’s Restaurant on King Street. Now 95, she sat at a table as he spoke.
This hotel is more than just a hotel to me,” Bennett said. Its not just an investment. Its more than that. Its our familys personal stake in the ground.
The plagiarism as a student certainly speaks to his character as does his poor student performance. I should add the evasion of military service.
Actually In real estate development you avoid an playing head to head mutual throat cut
You only build an identical property next to one that is over occupied
Supply saturation is not smart and you don’t go looking to put the other guy out of business
Not with 200 million to one billion dollar hotel property
You want to open up occupied not cutting prices
I’m not trying to be smarmy so please don’t take offense
Building a Trump hotel say next to a Mandarin or Ritz Carlton would never be undertaken unless Trump knows they are full as ticks
It’d be like building a Waffle House next to a poor performing Waffle Hut or a new Midas next to a low demand Meineke
What you’re saying makes good business sense when I think about it financially, vs wanting to take someone’s business away.
Sounds like something you have done in the past.
It’s something I do now
Have a good saturday
I’m sort of surprised that the Trump Organization had any interest in Charleston, it’s just not that big of a market. The hotel is only going to be nine stories, on the site of a former public library.
Good for this Bennett man, for rising from what sounds like humble beginnings to be able to do this, but Charleston is just so full of itself. “The rooftop terrace provides a view and experience that you’d only get in Europe.” And Savannah, and Wilmington...
