Morocco is run by a pro-Western “enlightened” king who has a gorgeous Berber wife (only one) who wears no hijab at all. But OTOH, he could be assassinated and replaced by a fanatic next year. This is not likely, however, because the Royal Moroccan Army is solidly behind the king. The RMA is a professional and secular outfit, beards are not allowed FWIW.

Not really...It’s odd to think that people here on FR believe government should ban a form of modest clothing. And spare me the “death cult” nonsense...too many people here are going full retard.

If women want to wear it, then it should not be banned. Women being forced by government to wear it is another issue, but removing the freedom to wear it is another. Morocco is one of the most religious countries on Earth (according to surveys)...me thinks this could backfire badly.

Morocco is as secular and Western as any Muslim nation can be, because that is the king's choice. The Royal Moroccan Army is loyal to the king, even beards are forbidden for soldiers.

This is his wife, a red-headed Berber lass, who NEVER covers her hair. This is a MAJOR signal to the Moroccan people that fanatics will NOT be tolerated. Since Mohammed the 6th claims to be a lineal descendent to the "Prophet Mohammed," if you diss the king or the wife, you could wind up in the slammer. This includes any insinuations that the king's gorgeous and "uncovered" wife is not a perfect lady in every way.

See my comments above. In the Royal Moroccan Army, beards are forbidden, this is a glaring sign to the country that the army is secular and belongs to the King.

Only senior NCOs and officers can even have a little tiny mustache, but few do. This reg might have changed, but for sure, NO BEARDS.

This means if you are a fanatic who believes that beards are a sign of Muslim devotion, you are not wanted or allowed in the secular and professional RMA.

Daily shaving and short haircuts separate the RMA from the fanatics, just like the king's wife having her long hair down at all times.

True, but the RMA culture is distinctly secular and professional, apart from the population on purpose. They RMA troops are loyal to the king, and fanatics are not permitted by design. But of course that could change. OTOH, Moroccans know a lot of their GDP comes from European tourists, and Moroccans are used to seeing Euros in shorts, and bikinis on beaches.

I carry no brief for Moroccans anywhere. My point is that due to their Westernized and rather secular king (wife uncovered, no beards in the military) Morocco ia as “Western” as any 99% Muslim country can ever be.

My point being, if Morocco can’t escape the worst that Islam has to offer, in spite of the king’s efforts, Islam can’t be tamed anywhere.

And that is where I lean: it can’t be tamed.

And the king could be assassinated next year or next week, but that is not likely, do to the fierce loyalty of the RMA and his intel services.

But then, we thought the same about the pro-Western Shah of Iran, and we saw how that turned out. BTW, in the Iranian military, the policy went from no beards to all beards after the ayatollahs came in.
