TERRORISTS planned a Christmas Day bomb attack targeting Melbourne landmarks including Federation Square and Flinder Street Station, police claim.
A major multi-agency operation between Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO foiled the alleged plot, with five people in custody.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said in a press conference this morning: “We believe that there was an intention to conduct what we call a multimode attack, possibly on Christmas Day, the possible locations that we have been working on have been Federation
Square, Flinders Street Station and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Watching the press conference, police are saying it was a bomb attack. The men who are in custody include somebody born in Egypt, and Australian born men of Lebanese heritage who have been described as “self-radicalised.”
St Pauls Cathedral (Anglican/Church of England), Federation Square, and Flinders Street Railway Station (Melbourne’s largest and central train station) are all located at three corners of a major Melbourne intersection - so all three co-located (the fourth corner is occupied by a pub with the rest of its block made up of various other retail and commercial establishments.)

Not quite Christmas Eve yet - that’s tomorrow. But yes, it’s looking like it’s going to be a warm one for Christmas - forecast top of 35C/95F for Melbourne (poor Adelaide is looking at 40C/104F).
My family actually does a pretty traditional English style Christmas Dinner despite the weather - Roast Pork and Turkey with all the trimmings, followed by Christmas Pudding. Thank God for air conditioning. But we are down at the holiday house at San Remo, right on the beach, looking out at Phillip Island, on the other side of Westernport Bay from the country’s largest naval training base, HMAS Cerberus. This is my element.
