I do believe their objective is to get Trump to stop the inquiry so they can claim a cover-up.

I think the major Russian intervention was the elephant in the living room that the lefties are treating like a mouse.
Namely the content of Wikileaks.
They COULD have taken the tack that Donald Trump took when his raunchy comments about being an irresistable Lothario to a radio host a decade ago were revealed. That this was locker room guy talk, never intended for public consumption, and was in a context that is being misunderstood now.
Podesta just decided to be “Zen” about it. Non-defense amounted to acceptance, though, and it was not taken with very good humor.

But who knows what happens in this world of intrigue.
When God works, He works in mysterious ways. Putin is a complex character. He has sinned in obvious ways, and yet some of his interests are aligned with pro-Christian ideals. Quite a few biblical saints did not live out plaster saint lives. I tend to cheer for finding the Christ influence in a situation if the signs seem to be there. Christ can bring peace where it seemed peace was quite unlikely, by His shaping of world events.
