China and Donald Trump

Rarely in history has a ten-minute phone call, like that on Friday December 2, 2016, been credited with raising fears of new tensions in international politics. According to the New York Times on December 4, 2016, the “protocol shattering” phone call between president-elect Donald Trump and the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, leader of the Democratic Progressive party, is “rattling Asia.”

Irrespective of whether the telephone call was well planned for tactical reasons, orchestrated by former Senator Bob Dole, or a diplomatic gaffe on the part of Trump, or a clever political overture by Tsai Ing-wen to strengthen relations with the U.S., or simply a polite message of congratulations to Trump on his victory, the New York Times, the mainstream media, and the political correct have erred once again in their assessment of a minor event.

So far, the anticipated shaking, rattling, and rocking in Asia has not materialized. Instead, a short, polite congratulatory courtesy call from a democratically elected head of a friendly political entity has been transformed into high drama, drawing attention to China policy. Even if the phone conversation included a brief exchange of political views or proposals, those ten minutes did not attempt to change U.S. policy toward China, let alone the world. The call did not constitute a formal U.S. recognition of Taiwan.

The short phone call did not ignite any activity except in the U.S. mainstream media, nor did the courtesy call by the Taiwanese leader lead to any discussion of or indication of policy by the incoming U.S. administration towards the Far East, or touch on future U.S. policy on the controversial relationship between China and Taiwan.

It is actually a big deal for China, but they are quiet because it doesn't do any good to them if they openly condemn Trump now. If you carry a really big stick, China calms down.

Trump is still a private citizen until Jan 20th, until then, and even after, NO ONE dictates who Trump can or cannot talk to.
Red China can pound sand.

This stupid situation is a result of Carter. He's the one that agreed to the one - China policy and decided that the President wouldn't talk to Taiwan. I remember when the situation was actually sort of reversed.

Mainland China was known as Red China, and the Taiwan Government was considered the legitimate government of China. I think Carter also placed the Chinese in control of the Panama Canal at that time - a negative for our national security.

A Trump administration that already gets on well with Russia, India, Japan and Taiwan?

I imagine he has China’s attention.

China called Trump a "rookie".

This is an indication that China is concerned about the status quo.

As well they should be; China needs us much more than we need them.

Their economy is based on exports.

Their oligarchy is sitting on a tinderbox.

Trump just got China's undivided attention in a way that hasn't happened in a long, long time.

This stupid situation is a result of Carter.

He took a democratic government and force them to give up their Security Council seat to a communist regime. He did give away the Panama Canal but China took it over later. The great William F Buckley debated Ronal Reagan on the Canal giveaway. Reagan made a great showing but they gave it away anyway.

Of course one has to remember that Nixon was the one that opened China to the free world.

Their oligarchy is sitting on a tinderbox.

and that's what it's all about. The oligarchy. Same as the US basically, until maybe now.

The working stiffs I'm spending my days with over here, have a whole lot more going on getting through the day to day than to worry about this stuff. Just like the working stiffs in the US.

He took many first steps on the road to perdition, as well as intermediate ones. Yes, I do remember Nixon - who could forget: ONLY NIXON COULD GO TO CHINA - repeated endlessly by the sycophant media - not to mention all the other stuff.
