Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will honour war dead but won't apologise when he becomes the first Japanese leader to visit Pearl Harbor this month, a top government spokesman said on Tuesday.

The move follows Barack Obama's historic May trip to Hiroshima, the first by a sitting US president, where he spoke of victims' suffering but offered no apology for dropping the world's first nuclear bomb.

Obama showed weakness in Hiroshima, this is probably why Abe won’t apologize.

This might not be a popular but there is nothing to apologize for. Pearl Harbor was a legitimate military target.

You’re right. It’s just under 44 now. :)

Pearl Harbor would have been legitimate. It was still a dirty move to bomb it without a formal declaration of war.

“Good” King FDR took care of that by blockading Japan.

Good. Lets stop with the apologizing. The guy is probably too old to be a part of the WW2 decision making process.

From what I understand the Japanese were going to declare war a few minutes before the planned attack. The Japanese Embassy in DC screwed up. This was based on the tradition of ninjas before assassinating someone sleeping would wake the person up then commit the deed.

Nor should he, any more than Obama should have.

An empty apology for an intended slight, frankly, is insulting. Better to let sleeping dogs lie.

Why should Abe apologize.

The war ended almost 75 years ago

Most Japanese people alive today had not even been born before the war ended.

Time to move on.

Wars have happened since the dawn of time - it's part of human nature.

Probably in the minority, here, but I don’t feel like every Japanese PM should travel to Pearl Harbor and tender another apology. At some point we should stop expecting an apology for something that happened so long ago. History is replete with dastardly acts by many, the US included. I’m not a fan of us apoplogizing for stuff and don’t see why we would expect it from others. Are we a snowflake country? Hell no! Let’s all just do the right thing going forward.

Yes, but Obama will probably apologize for the Navy to dare shoot down a few of the attackers.

Most people don’t know that Hiroshima was the home of one of Japan’s larger boot camps, also, a military target.

The current generation of Japanese should not be expected to grovel over the mistakes and crimes of their grandparents. There are 1001 ways to express regret, acknowledge historical responsibility, and reflect on loss and lessons learned. I assume Abe will be dignified and appropriate. It’s really no different from a proud southener reflecting on the Civil War without being required to spend 99 percent of his time wallowing through a slavery guilt trip.

Which was a communication snafu not a delibert act by the Japaneses.

We really need to treat this “”apologies for historic wrongs” fetish of the political Left as the childish nonsense it is.

Current people of Japan, Germany, the US, the UK etc have nothing to apologize for. They had no role in the polices and the decision the political Leftist are demanding apologies for.

It merely an intellectually infantile debate tactics.

The left wants to argument that because of this irrelevant historic fact (i.e. segregation, slavery, “war crimes” etc) you must embrace our radical Leftist political agenda now.

No we don't.
