Ex-US general: We pay a price for backing Israel (James Mattis)
The Times of Israel ^ | July 25, 2013 | Lazar Berman

Posted on 11/20/2016 4:57:39 PM PST by ari-freedom

Retired US Marine Corps General James Mattis recently said that America pays a price for its perceived bias in support of Israel.

“I paid a military security price every day as the commander of CentCom because the Americans were seen as biased in support of Israel, and that moderates all the moderate Arabs who want to be with us, because they can’t come out publicly in support of people who don’t show respect for the Arab Palestinians,” he said Saturday at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado in response to a question about the peace process

Mattis took over Central Command, whose area of responsibility includes the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, from David Petraeus in 2010.

He called the current situation in Israel “unsustainable” and blamed the settlements for harming prospects for peace. The chances for an accord between Israel and the Palestinians, said Mattis, “are starting to ebb because the settlements and where they’re at are going to make it impossible to maintain the two state solution.”

Yea Jimmy, everyone pays a price for believing truth, but the rewards of truth are eternal life. The reward for political correctness is hellfire (broad is the way that leads to destruction)

Caspar Weinberger was no friend of Israel when he was Secretary of Defense and this put unnecessary and destructive pressure on the US-Israel relationship.

I hope President Trump makes another choice as Secretary of Defense.

What he said is just the truth. There’s a price- but it’s well compensated.
That’s how foreign affairs are done.
At the time of his speech in July 2013 Egypt’s military has just overthrown the Muslim Brotherhood government and Egypt/Israel cooperation- the basis of any Israeli peace- was in flux.

Or is that dancing dangerously close to enacting Godwin's law?

This is a hit piece on Mattis. He happens to be right.

Israel knows how to look after its own interests. All of the posters on this thread who claim that Israel is our natural ally need to explain Jonathan Pollard and the great damage he did to our national security.

And only the uninformed would call Mattis a friend of radical Islam.

What this is about is putting America’s interests FIRST.

1) Military Security problem - True

2) Why? "because the Americans were seen as biased in support of Israel [by the Arabs] - True

3) Result? "...moderates - all the moderate Arabs who want to be with us... can’t come out publicly in support of people who don’t show respect for the Arab Palestinians,” - True

This was an assessment of the situation he faced as CentCom commander, not a State Department policy paper. If you were to make a similar assessment of your situation as a police chief describing "community relations" on Chicago's South Side, you would come to similar conclusiions. You would also immediately be labeled "RACIST" by half of the Press & politicians and "N***** - Lover" by the other half.

Muslims rate the respect the Koran shows to non-Muslims, taking abrogation fully into account of course.

“all the moderate Arabs who want to be with us, because they can’t come out publicly in support”

I love friends who only support me in private, and reserve the right to oppose me in public./s

And maybe Mattis needed a little backbone to stand up for OUR friends, the good guys, the Israelis. Even a cursory look at the Arab Israeli conflict shows that there is not agreement, land handed over, NOTHING that will stop the Arab aggression.
The Israelis handed over Gaza as a modern turnkey city with infrastructure intact. All Jews were forcibly removed. There were giant greenhouses. There were utilities and water supplies. There was a beautiful beach.
What did the Palestinians do? Trash it all and start launching an -endless- barrage of rockets.

No, Mattis was not an honest assessor, he was an idiot to pretend that we would gain a single friend, or have a single day of peace if a two state solution was reached.

It is now respectable after Obama to be an open anti Zionist and be a Democrat in good standing. Soon the American consensus on Israel will begin to fracture as the General’s position becomes a Democratic core belief. It is not surprising that Keith Ellison, who is openly pro Palestinian and anti Israel, is a serious candidate for DNC chairman.

As the CG of CENTCOM, he dealt almost exclusively with Muslim Arab countries. Israel falls into EUCOM’s AOR. He had a job to do, and I’m sure America’s support of Israel (as tepid as that’s been over the years, certainly in 2010) caused numerous headaches for him.
