Dependent on migrant dollars, rural Mexico prays for Trump defeat

In the small southern market town of Molcaxac, 650 miles (1050 km) from the U.S. border, Alicia Villa is praying to God that Republican candidate Donald Trump does not become the next president of the United States.

Over the past two decades, as Mexico's rural economy stalled, Molcaxac and hundreds of towns like it became dependent on dollars sent by relatives who made the perilous journey north, a lifeline she fears will be cut by a Trump White House.

Villa, 65, said funds sent by a daughter working illegally as a house cleaner in Sacramento, California have supported her family for 12 years because the work she does as receptionist in Molcaxac does not pay enough to make ends meet.

"Trump says he will kick out everyone who doesn't have papers and we really need them to be there," said Villa, adding that she had not seen some family members living in the United States in 20 years.

The Sacramento homeowner should hire American maids, or else don’t make such a fetish of being spotlessly clean.

With Trump, Mexico will finally get its very overdue civil war.

He won’t only make the US great again but also Mexico!

Mexico’s second highest source of income after oil. Their government rivals ours.

“Trump says he will kick out everyone who doesn’t have papers and we really need them to be there,”

Yeah? We really need them to be back home with you so our nation can give these jobs your relatives steal back to unemployed people in our country. Further, we don’t want your relatives sending all their money back to Mexico but want those dollars to be spent here to grow OUR economy. Hey Alicia, start organizing the people in your country to get rid of the politicians who keep it messed up!

The flow of dollars won’t stop, there will just be a fee attached to sending money to Mexico. Mexicans will he paying to build the wall.

Wealthy Mexicans REALLY hate Trump. All these Mexican peasants will be coming home. But now they are addicted to welfare.

This article inadvertently nails the precise method by which Trump will get Mexico to pay for the wall. He's going to tax remittances that illegals in the U.S. send to relatives in Mexico. Mexico's economy depends heavily upon these payments, and they will absolutely pay the one-time cost to build the wall, rather than face losing a perpetual stream of billions per year.

I've been shaking my head at all the liberal (and many "conservative") commentators who have ridiculed Trump's claim that Mexico will pay for the wall, and who have said that Trump never explains how he thinks this will happen. The precise plan, to tax remittances, has been spelled out in great detail on his website since the primaries! It's been there all along for anyone who would just take the time to read it. Amazing.

All the rest of his policy proposals have been on his website the entire time, too. They are VERY specific and detailed, contrary to the media assertion that he has nothing but vague generalities. Of course, in this day and age it is probably asking a lot to expect "journalists" to actually take 5 minutes to look up a webpage and read.

Their relatives are like ticks, sucking the lifeblood out of this country. Get them off, squash them flat, so our country can be healthy and back on her feet again.

I seem to remember there’s about a billion dollars per month wired to Mexico via Western Union.

At a 1% transaction fee, that’s 10 million/month. Construction is not my area, but that would probably be plenty. Anything left over and/or after the wall is built, the rest will pay for deportations and manned/drone border patrol.

Hope she has plenty of tortillas prepared. She's about to have a big la familia reunion.

Mexico should be a very prosperous country. It has oil, a great climate for tourism and agriculture and hard-working people. Its corrupt government and oligarchy of afabulously wealthy few( note Carlos Slim, major investor in the NYTimes) keep the majority of he population poor. A Trump administration may also make Mexico great for its own people.

Completely correct.

Mexico could become one of THE most prosperous countries in all of Latin America if they can break the hold of the powerful oligarchs that control the country (starting with Carlos Slim Helu). The country has huge mineral and agricultural resources waiting to be fully exploited, but the oligarchs are holding it all back.

We are doing Mexicans, especially poor Mexicans, a favor.

The current situation allows Mexico to export their problems. Hopefully, very soon, they will have to deal with them.

As for the oligarchs, Mexicans should boycott the hell out of them.
