Recommended reading about abuses of big data algorithms that make the wrong assumptions:

The Uses And Misuses Of ‘Big Data’: A Conversation

“data should work in service of human beings, not the other way around.”

Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy

“O’Neil is an ideal person to write this book. She is an academic mathematician turned Wall Street quant turned data scientist who has been involved in Occupy Wall Street and recently started an algorithmic auditing company. She is one of the strongest voices speaking out for limiting the ways we allow algorithms to influence our lives… While Weapons of Math Destruction is full of hard truths and grim statistics, it is also accessible and even entertaining. O’Neil’s writing is direct and easy to read—I devoured it in an afternoon.”
— Scientific American

“Cathy O’Neil has seen Big Data from the inside, and the picture isn’t pretty. Weapons of Math Destruction opens the curtain on algorithms that exploit people and distort the truth while posing as neutral mathematical tools. This book is wise, fierce, and desperately necessary.”
— Jordan Ellenberg, University of Wisconsin-Madison, author of How Not To Be Wrong

“O’Neil has become [a whistle-blower] for the world of Big Data… [in] her important new book… Her work makes particularly disturbing points about how being on the wrong side of an algorithmic decision can snowball in incredibly destructive ways.”

Meh.

Sounds way more significant than it has proved to be in real life. This was technology Cruz campaign relied on (via the Mercers – donors who are now with Trump). Fairly useless data, IMO – proof of which is Cruz's embarrassing loss.

Garbage in, garbage out is the same thing no matter how large the data sets involved

I have no doubt that there are good algorithms for predicting voting patterns. However, predicting voting patterns is the least of the problems associated with an effective Get Out The Vote effort.

The bigger issue is motivating your potential voters to get registered and ge to the polls. People have tuned out emails and third party phone calls. The only thing that will make an appreciable difference in turnout is a compelling message and personal contact.

This has to be BS.

For one thing, the time for targeting and data gathering is long over.

For another thing, this “Trump needs to make a big comeback” talk doesn’t sound like anything Trump would say.

Finally, the idea that voters are like ripe fruit on the vine, and campaign workers need to identify them and get them to the polls - that’s a lefty thing - Trump voters are self-motivated, champing at the bit to vote. They don’t need to be identified and dragged to the polls. They just need to hear Trump’s message and see him stumping all over the place.

Trump has two huge rallies per day, and talks to the adversarial press multiple times daily. He’s getting his message out that he will be the champion of all of the people who are getting screwed by the rigged system. He’s proving by his daunting campaign schedule that he has an unprecedented work ethic, the courage to fight against terrible odds against the globalist power brokers, and a knack for surviving, winning and succeeding where others have failed. Clinton, by contrast seems exhausted and is obviously one of the main crooks that rigged the system in the first place.

Either it will work or it won’t, but Trump is doing everything right - I really can’t see what a bunch of data analysis is going to do at this point.

Maybe it’s for show - to shut the mouths of “expert” snowflakes who are saying “oh no, Hilary has a superior ground game, wahhh!”

Well stated and I agree.

WaPo is trying to motivate straggling cankle voters to get-out-the-vote by hook or Crook.
This story also serves to create an excuse narrative when Donald Trump wins.

You can just hear the MSM’s spin-spouting the following for weeks to come:
“poor Hitlery, it’s no wonder she lost since she had to cope with: health issues due to her having the “flu”, mean sexist Trump, his racist Deplorables, Wikileak email distractions, Russian aggression, Alt-Media relentless attacks of untruths”.

Yeah, but I want to know how those Trump guys broke into Weiner and Huma’s Place and planted those 10,000 Emails on their Laptop.

I guess they hired some KGB guys, right?
