I love history.
And old quotes.
“Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” The quote is most likely due to George Santayana, and in its original form it read, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’

I think the battle of Athens would come out completely different today.
The Bundys come to mind.
If Athens happened today, the FBI and BATF&E would have swooped in like an army to force the surrender of those veterans who took control of the ballot boxes.
They would have been branded "Domestic Terrorists" and those who were stuffing the ballot boxes would have been patted on the back, "You poor dears" and sent on their way - probably with the ballot boxes under their arms.

I’m proud to say that I live in Athens TN and it’s a wonderful conservative small town. That’s why when I say there are Trump signs popping up all over the place you can believe it! :-)

I have heard of the Battle of Athens but I had not heard of the Wilmington insurrection of 1898 until recently. In that case over 2,000 armed racist Democrats took over Wilmington. They kicked out the city government, burned down the black newspaper and killed many black people as they rampaged through the town.
That was a case where evil Democrats won by force of arms and most decent people including a lot of blacks just left town.
