As retailers started opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day in recent years to offer deep discounts ahead of Black Friday, some consumers cried foul.

They want the deals, but they don't want to leave their family celebrations to get them. Some also spoke up on behalf of employees of the stores that opened, saying it's unfair to ask them to also step away from family and friends on the holiday.

And a bunch of Millennials will cry about what if they run out of cranberry sauce?

... some consumers cried foul.

Funny how we never hear about "consumers" — or their complaints — relating to ObamaCare.

Muslims will be disappointed that they can’t create public carnage at these stores on Thanksgiving. Blood and mass death is how Muslims celebrate.

The only time I have ever gone out on Thanksgiving is to the grocery store to get some forgotten item, and that has rarely happened. If all the grocers were closed, we’d get by, because there is usually such a surfeit of food on the table on Thanksgiving that something forgotten would be no big deal (and we don’t eat that horrid canned cranberry sauce). If we absolutely had to have something, like more ice, we can usually find a quick mart open somewhere. There is no way I’d go shopping for Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving. I don’t even go out on Black Friday.

I saw this coming 25 years ago when I worked for a now-extinct discount retailer.

We were summoned to a corporate conference call in early August that covered a number of issues. At the very end they moderator came on and told us “Oh, and one more thing. We are thinking about being open on Thanksgiving this year. What do you guys think of that?”

There was a full minute and a half of dead silence. Absolutely NOBODY liked the idea, but nobody was speaking up.

Finally a store manager in Detroit piped-up.

“well, G** Dammit, you’ve gotta draw the line SOMEWHERE!”

Long story short....a bunch of corporate suits hopped on the company jet and immediately flew to Detroit. This gentleman was dragged into a private meeting, where he was told to cool it on the conference calls.

We were open that Thanksgiving.

Myself if a store wishes to be open on Thanksgiving or Christmas more power to them. If you don't want to shop on these days then don't go there. Real simple. Some people don't celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, that is the beauty of America we can choose to do these things.

Also, cyber sales that don’t need staffing on the day (order it on T-day, pick it up at the store on BF-day) make this model easier.

canned cranberry sauce

It’s so easy to make from fresh cranberries. Add a little orange peal.

You are missing something. The suits will be at home enjoying Thanksgiving with their families. The grunts who don’t make much are stuck.
