After many years as a white student radical (in high school and then college), I'm reconsidering my experience. I made a lot of mistakes and was blind in many ways, particularly as a white person. What follows are some lessons that I am learning, some strategies for reflecting on, interrogating, and disrupting racism in our lives. 1) Transforming the world means challenging and changing institutions and ourselves. Systems of oppression are ingrained in both and, accordingly, must be confronted in both. More than once an activist of color or an actively anti-racist white person has confronted me: "Why are you always rushing off to do solidarity actions with people in other parts of the world when you don't even make time to deal with your own shit?" They're right. As white student activists, we are in fact notorious for protesting injustices across the globe, yet neglecting to confront systems of oppression on our campuses, in our communities, and in ourselves. Being an effective student activist means making priorities, and at times we must prioritize slower-paced, not-so-flashy work over dramatic actions that offer immediate gratification. Being an effective white student activist means prioritizing daily dismantlement of white privilege--creating and participating in forums for whites to grapple with racism, allying with struggles that people of color are engaged in, constantly remaining open to our own mistakes and feedback from others.

It’s amazing, when you work a meaningful job, just how little time you have to work yourself up into a frenzy over all those little things that send leftists into tizzies.

When the Black Lives Matter crowd gets around to addressing slavery of black people in Africa today and muslim slave trade (sex slaves, labor,...), get back to me.
Until then, they should check their privilege. They live in a nation that is much better than the situation in much of the world.
#11 POC Should explore the idea that they are “discriminated” against - not so much because of their color, but rather because of their attitude.
They might be amazed at how well they are treated and/or received when they simply remove the chip from their shoulders.

Folks, there is hope. I teach, and this year I have a student teacher that I am mentoring. The day I met him, I thought, “Good Lord, get a load of this guy!” He looks like your typical bearded, metrosexual, Bernie Sanders type. He’s actually not at all. In fact, he is a dyed in the wool Trump fanatic! He has stickers all over his car, pictures of him at rallies, the works. He says that all of his college friends are as well. He’s done missionary work in Uganda, so he’s a bit of a goody two shoes, but I reckon he’ll be alright.
There’s a scene in “Dirty Harry” in which the maniac killer hires a black guy to beat the living shiite out of him. The author of this article might look into that - I think it would make him feel better.

Here’s an idea, snowflakes. How ‘bout we just accept the fact that we ALL have some prejudice in us and we’ve all suffered trials and tribulations of one form or another. And all the pontificating and “privilege” shaming from holier-than-thou SJW’s like you won’t make it go away. Why don’t we for once take Dr MLK’s advice and at least make a good faith effort at judging each other solely by the content of our character? Besides, me thinks groups like SOAwatch protest too much. The ones who point their fingers are the ones with the filthy hands.

What an awful world view. “Humanity would be such paradise if it weren’t for these privileged white nuts.” Well maybe it would be, by comparison, without nuts like him. He’s 99% problem to 1% solution.
These are the zero sum game zombies. To them, because “white society” (which happens also to be largely Christian society) did well, they had to have raped somebody else. Instead of, through insight, ingenuity, and hard work, having made more of what was there in the first place. The very internet on which he complains was not bequeathed ex nihilo by God; those narsty white folks dug it out piece by piece over centuries of science. Because scripture said, and they believed, that the wildness of nature should be tamed to good uses.
White privilege is the biggest myth of the modern world.
Most Americans, IMHO, are already living in a post-racist mindset. They are far beyond any of the stereotypical attitudes of earlier times.
We all see this every day, when we walk out our front doors and end up at our jobs, the local convenience store, a sporting event, a subway car, or a restaurant, whether it's down the street or hundreds of miles away.
Americans of all races and origins, in their everyday interactions with each other, amply demonstrate the common decency and egalitarian mindset of the average citizen.
The ripple effect of all this "average American decency" is that it has already almost fully established a post-racist society, and that's a good thing.
The problem is that there are still individuals here and there (in all races) who fail their fellow citizens, and perpetuate outdated, counterproductive, and ultimately un-American prejudices. Those are the individuals who have to change their hearts.
That means ending racial preferences of all kinds under the law. Affirmative Action, for example, has joined the pantheon of Great Wrongs in American history. Government should be color-blind under the Law and Justice.
I'm totally convinced, from my own experiences, that most of America— Black, White, Hispanic, whatever— is ready for a future which is post-racial. A vocal minority is clinging to the past.
All Americans should treat their fellow citizens accordingly, and when we do, the last vestiges of the Old Wrongs will dissolve into the past where they belong.
America— the glass is half full!
