Found you! NASA re-establishes contact with missing spacecraft
CNN online ^ | August 23, 2016 | Sheena McKenzie

Despite almost two years of silence, NASA never stopped searching for its long lost spacecraft STEREO-B. NASA announced Sunday that it had re-established contact with STEREO-B after communications were lost in October 2014. Contact with the spacecraft -- which works in tandem with a second spacecraft STEREO-A to study the sun -- was lost during a test of one of its timers.

Launched in October 2006, the STEREO mission includes two spacecraft -- one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other behind -- tasked with monitoring the flow of energy and matter from the sun to Earth. The spacecrafts have already successfully revealed the structure of coronal mass ejections, which are eruptions of matter from the sun so powerful they can disrupt satellites.

Did they ask for more money to get ‘reacquainted’ with it now?

"Where's the flute, Howard?"

(tag line of an old ad for stereo equipment back in the '70s)

Sorry, for some reason this story reminded me of stereo separation, a subject which has ceased to be of any interest in this age of ear buds and digital audio.

I don’t know what to believe. I thought NASA was all about Muslim outreach.

Sounds a bit like something from the 1st Star-Trek movie.

Kirk and Spok are engaging in banter about the importance of emotion in dealing with females of their respective species, when suddenly Lt. Uhura interrupts...

Uhura: Excuse me Captain, but I'm getting a very faint signal on an obsolete electromagnetic frequency band.

Kirk: Distress signal?

Uhura: Unclear at present, sir. The signal is intermittent, and is coming from a great distance...

Mr. Spok gazes into his status viewer hood. His eyes are illuminated by a green glow from within the device.

Spok: The source of the signal seems to be rather ancient, Captain. Signal properties indicate generation by semiconductor devices of a type last in use during the earliest period of human space exploration.

I very much disagree and can assure you that there are plenty of young men and women who spend a lot of time (and money) to get a "perfect" stereo configuration.

Really! I thought they all listened to music on hand-held devices.

My children have absolutely zero interest in conventional stereo, as experienced through loud speakers.

I doubt they even know what "a stereo" is. They are constantly plugged in via ear buds.

Depends on whether they’re living on their own, I suspect.

Personally I prefer ear buds because I can get pretty-good-quality sound all around me for about 20 bucks, or passable-quality for 2 bucks, while a stereo system is a lot more than that for the same quality.

At least from what I’ve seen; I could be wrong!

Scientists had been testing the timer when STEREO-B's line of sight and communication to Earth was blocked by the sun.

So, it was just plain old positioning that was the fault? They had to wait until Earth and the satellite were no longer on opposite sides of the sun?......................
