APNewsBreak: California may beef up electric vehicle mandate

With the extension of California’s landmark climate change law stalled, a legislative plan is emerging to significantly up the ante on California’s commitment to electric vehicles by requiring that 15 percent of all new automobiles be emission-free within a decade.

Assemblywoman Autumn Burke, D-Los Angeles, told The Associated Press on Friday that she’ll introduce legislation next week to ramp up the pressure on carmakers.

Automakers that fail to sell enough electric vehicles would be required to make payments to rivals that do or pay a fine to the state.

“If we create more competition in the market, that automatically will trigger a more affordable vehicle,” Burke said in an interview. …

Heck. Let the marketplace do it efficiently.

But...but...CA allows no new coal or nuclear energy plants to be built. So where will the electricity come from?

It'll come from the outlet in the wall EEE! That wall outlet powers everything! God you conservatives are so stupid!

Potemkin village.

Fig leaf.

Shell game.

Phoniness.

People should stop falling for this.

California has already tried, and failed at this mandate. They had a similar “emission free” vehicle sales mandate for Y2K. It was another Y2K bug that failed miserably.

Where are the going to get all that electricity from? Wind mills and solar panels just aren’t going to cut it.

California doesn’t produce that much electricity, relative to their usage, so lets increase usage substantially! yay!

” requiring that 15 percent of all new automobiles be emission-free within a decade. “

They will have to start classifying bicycles as automobiles to do this.

Electric vehicles are not emission free.

Liberals are good at dreaming up unrealistic solutions to problems but horribe at executing them, actually doing the work to bring them to fruition, and \ or foreseeing the unfavorable consequences of their actions.

If they had any nads, they’d force 15% to be solar cars.

Lots of people already know there are now many guns made which can’t be sold in california.

But now also there are even “California only” catalytic converters, too.

If on Ebay u try to buy the cheaper “other USA” types and u have a California address, they will NOT ship it and in many cases they’ll charge you a $5 penalty.

Basically in California u have to be a millionaire or a TOTAL BUM on benefits and NOWHERE in-between.

It isn’t stealing when you have to pay through the nose for it. We in soCal are already paying a minimum of 15 cents per kwh and have tiered rates. I live in a small condo and rarely use my air conditioning, and I still end up paying at least some of my bill at the highest tier of 35 cents per kwh. I think rates are actually headed higher due to laws requiring utilities to buy more and more power from hydro and solar and wind.

It’s a farce. Any other product you get a price break for buying a larger quantity, but in CA electricity costs more the more you buy.

The kicker is that the electric company would install a separate meter for an electric car charger so that portion was at a lower rate. I get the feeling as soon as they have enough people dependent on EV charging they will cut out those breaks so suddenly the charging is at regular household rates and your electric bill doubles from $400/m to $800/m.

Then again, solar panels, even without tax credits, are now cheap enough they pay for themselves in 7 years or so. And soCal is a great location to maximize panel output.
