When pot is legal, how do you convince teens to abstain?

Portland, Ore.

For Oregon kids growing up in the age of legal marijuana, the presence of pot can be a matter of perspective.

Pausing during a visit to a mall in Portland, Neema Doti and her friends described the plant as ubiquitous.

They recounted classmates who got it from older friends or even, in one case, a permissive parent. It was, one noted, all over Snapchat. But that didn’t seem to influence Doti and her friends, who uniformly said they had no interest.

“You might not be in control of whatever you’re doing,” said Doti, 18. “It messes up your health as well ... it’ll affect your education.”

But less abstinent teenagers said they saw little difference. Sam S., an 18-year-old who grew up in Portland, described himself as a “relatively avid user,” reflecting an adolescent propensity for experimenting regardless of the law, which took effect in October. He declined to be named since he’s still not allowed to use marijuana legally. Not that it’s ever stopped him.

“From before it was legalized to after didn’t really change anything,” Sam said.

The same way you get them to abstain from cigarettes, booze, and sex.

All through HS I never did pot of alcohol. I suffered from a case of “fear of dad.” I’m now almost 52 and have still never tried pot. I didn’t drink alcohol until I was 20.

Same way as parents have done since the beginning of time:consistent love & discipline.

Same as alcohol, you can’t.

You keep a lid on it (good pun heh?) through involved parenting, as in watching your kids.

For sure you are correct hat in some instances you can't. Some kids will go off the deep end with drugs or alcohol.

If you are going to wait until they reach their teens to instill proper morals and behavior, you have failed as a parent.

When my son was 12 or 13, I took him on a tour through a very trashy local trailer park.

I told him “all of these people smoke pot.”

This is a Portland article

Raising kids in Portland from what I’ve witnessed there is a bigger challenge than pot or alcohol

If pot were legal in say Northwest Florida and illegal in Portland you’d still be way better off in northwest Florida or South Alabama

You don’t get them to abstain and that is the very purpose of removing restrictions on marijuana. The propaganda getting young people to become marijuana addicts is the same as the propaganda steering them in to all manner of sexual perversions. A debauched population is easily controlled.

You convince them marijuana is the drug of their parents' generation and, thus, it is extremely uncool for them to also be using it.

Most companies are not going to change their policies to accommodate it's use.

You have to drill it into their head starting at a young age,

My son, who is in his late twenties, has never had a drink, smoked a cigarette or touched s drug.

I started on him in 6th grade and never let up.
