It was a beta test, with owners cautioned not to take their attention away from the road. This driver got carried away and found out why it was in beta. It was programmed to ignore large overhanging interstate signs, and did not distinguish between the side of a semi trailer and an overhanging sign. The driver was not paying attention and the vehicle went under the trailer at speed, no braking.
I’ll stick to my 1971 International Harvester 1210 thank you...not one computer . All systems besides the lights and windshield washer fluid dispenser are MANUAL...by the way my truck empty weighs 2 1/2 tons. Bring on your fuel efficient cars built with metal and explosive air bags...I run one of the cleanest/GREENEST (if your factor 45 years and still going in comparison to new teslas and the amount of energy used to gather their metals) tell who is smarter? The mowron who depends on a computer or a guy who knows what he drives?
I can’t wait until the perfect this technology so I can tell my car where to take me while I focus on more important things, like Pokemon Go.
IIRC, the driver was experimenting with the autopilot system and had hacked its functions.
Self Driving cars average 83 accidents.
It’s the new normal that makes drunk driving look tame.
MASD Mothers Against Self Driving
The driver must have been in pieces after that accident.
200 YEARS AWAY from reliable self driving cars.
And I have all relevant University Tech degrees and experience. I counted 50 defects in a minor self driving gadget. Unless the stakeholder has the relevant background, people do not know how to count defects.
Govt loves robot cars because they can track your every move. So they let big corporations hide the defects.
Tell your insurance company those 3 accidents on your motor record are really zero.
What will your insurance company tell you??
Look Mom, NO HANDS !!!!
...gulp
Maybe the car just went all Maximum Overdrive on the poor guy.
They’re quibbling with Musk’s estimate of how many lives would be saved, but not with the fact that it’s waaaaayyy safer than driving.
I read the article a little differently. What I’d like to see is data comparing accident rates with other high end luxury sedans in all conditions. If your driving around in a $70K - $100K car, one might be a little more attentive whether using autopilot or not..

Good point! On the other hand, drivers of hot sports cars aren’t actually known for driving conservatively.
