Finding workers a critical need in the county. (An article about lack of qualified workers)
Casey County News ^ | July 5, 2016 | Larry Rowell

Factories such as Tarter Industries are having problems meeting current production needs because of a critical shortage of workers. And, expansion plans for 2017 may have to be put on hold if workers cannot be found, said Travis Cox, vice president and general manager for Tarter Industries.

“Lack of workers is now my No. 1 inhibiting growth factor, bar none,” said Cox. “My last shortage report shows we are about 75-80 people under full budget head count. That’s just trying to keep up, not growing and expanding.”

Cox said TI is aggressively searching within two counties on each side of Casey County to try and attract workers.

“Tarter announced in March new starting pay would be $10.10 an hour. Nobody in the company would make less than $10.10 an hour,” he said.

In addition, Cox said the company has “poured a ton of money” into health plans to make health insurance more affordable as well as upping vacation days and holidays to try and give workers more time off.

Tarter Industries is by far the largest employer in the county. They are known across the United States in the Agricultural community as the producers of Gates for Farms. They also make common agriculture machinery.

As far as I can tell the biggest impediments for workers is being clean of Drugs, secondly is having a work ethic that makes them show up for work everyday that they are expected to do so.

It's sad to see an area that was once a vibrant place with plenty of jobs and plenty of workers to fill those jobs. Now most have fled out of the U.S. and in their place the government has showed up with 'welfare' and one of the things that I have seen welfare usher in is Drug abuse.

I thought this might be a topic of interest to most of you enjoy it please. I'm afraid I won't be able to respond to comments until later on today. Work you know...

The HR Manager for a small factory about 70 miles from Pittsburgh told me that 62% of job applicants were failing the drug test.

Supply meet demand.

Raise your salaries and you will have more supply.

Imagine how the results must be in areas where marijuana use is legal.

I’ve heard the same from so many employers here. They think they have someone, schedule a pre-employment drug test and that person never shows up.

"the biggest impediments for workers is being clean of Drugs"

Excellent point! We could fix a bunch of problems if we simply decriminalized weed.

If you smoke a joint you can't get a job, pretty stupid, huh.

Handle it like alcohol - high at work, fired. High at home, your business.

Lots of functional alcoholics in the labor force.

Plus lots of people in the weed business would be out of work.

Failing the drug test will soon be a non issue. Our government will rule by EO that job applicants cannot be drug tested. That should take care of the problem. /sar

I once talked with a teen ager about legalizing marijuana. She thought that legalization would do away with drug tests for employment.

I asked her if she thought it would be wise to show up for a job interview drunk.

Why work when government ‘benefits’ are so much better?

Obvious Liberal Solution: ban pre-employment drug testing

Since I worked with the USPS and did some hiring, I can tell you that passing the drug test is a huge road block, and Weed is not the main culprit. The Opioid painkillers/ heroin are a big issue; also anti-psychotics (recreational levels). Weed comes in after that, in my experience.

Why work for 20,000 a year and partial benefits when you can sit at home with your family of four, get free health care, WIC, EBT cards, Section 8 housing, etc. and still work on the side for cash and pay ZERO taxes on the equivalent of about 60,000 a year in benefits with no drug tests, don’t have to show up at any certain time etc?

That 20,000 a year gets about 1,400 a year taken out immediately for payroll taxes.

20,000 a year is not a job in the United States. It is closer to servitude.

There are people who make that much on the side under the table.

The top make way too much and the bottom need to earn more.

I can pass any and all drugs tests since I have not done any drugs since the 70’s and even then I was not really into drugs but would take a hit do to peer pressure. As I got older I decided the hell with peer pressure. I didn’t like getting high on drugs and I am not going to do it any longer. Now a good bottle scotch is an entirely different matter.

That’s a 21K annual wage.
in 2013, welfare alone in Kentucky was $18.7K.

Raise your salaries and you will have more supply.

No, they want cheap foreign labor to come in for low wages, subsidized by taxpayer funded social services.

I’m inclined to agree, but it should be up to the employer. However, if you raise the employment bar, be prepared to raise compensation too.

I’m clean of drugs. Never took ‘em.
I have a great work ethic. I show up on time, ready to go.
Now...if I can find a good - paying job with someone who will train me and can overlook my age (53), I’ll be set.
