...Police found the unidentified teenager unresponsive with several gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Based on shell casings found at the scene, Guglielmi said investigators believe the teen was shot with a "high-capacity assault rifle."
"It's certainly unusual," Guglielmi told the Chicago Tribune. "This is not the typical weapon used in a lot of shootings...'

Sounds kinda fishy to me.
Sure fits in nice with the Crisis du jour among the left though.

empty casings only tell caliber
To: skimbell
Do high-capacity assault weapons leave some telltale marking on the shell casings?

If only such weapons were illegal in Chicago, this would have never happened!!

You can take most rifles and cut them down to a concealable size. Not sure why this shooting is a huge surprise given the location.

Some actually do.An AK leaves a small dent in the side of the casing where the case hits the ejection port.HK roller lock weapons leave striations on the case from the fluted chamber.

This is true. Caliber not capacity.

Do high-capacity assault weapons leave some telltale marking on the shell casings? No, I believe the high-capacity part is inferred by the volume of shell casings.
But since "assault weapons" are banned in Chicago, there is no way this an assault weapon.

I guess he’d be less dead if he’d been shot with a musket.

Especially since “investigators believe the teen was shot with a high-capacity assault rifle”.
Well, what reason do we have to not believe “the investigators” conclusion? /sarc
Note, the plea to ^high-capacity^ cannot be verified simply by the number or type of casings found rolling on the ground. The weapon itself must be recovered in it’s configuration of use.

Maybe the kid was shot by a horde of assailants each carrying one Thomson contender, who left their one each casing behind.
It could happen!

It might indicate the weapon in some isolated circumstances but it cannot definitively indicate “high capacity.”

Since assault weapons have been banned since 1934 the entire argument is intellectual fraud through either ignorance or malicious intent.

This is not the typical weapon used in a lot of shootings....................... It doesn’t matter! It only has to be 1 and it will apply to all when it gets to the press room!

Nah. It was a Heizer PAR-1 pistol. The shooter probably held it side-ways when he was shooting...because that's how it came outta the box...
