Family of AR-15 Inventor Eugene Stoner: He Didn't Intend It for Civilians <hit piece>

The AR-15 is the most talked about gun in America.

But the AR-15's creator died before the weapon became a popular hit and his family has never spoken out.

Until now.

"Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47," the Stoner family told NBC News late Wednesday. "He died long before any mass shootings occurred. But, we do think he would have been horrified and sickened as anyone, if not more by these events."

The inventor's surviving children and adult grandchildren spoke exclusively to MSNBC by phone and email, commenting for the first time on their family's uneasy legacy. They requested individual anonymity in order to speak freely about such a sensitive topic. They also stopped short of policy prescriptions or legal opinions.

The ex-Marine and "avid sportsman, hunter and skeet shooter" never used his invention for sport. He also never kept it around the house for personal defense. In fact, he never even owned one.

See. Even the inventor was scared of it!

The bullets that tore through the Pulse nightclub in Orlando were Stoner's .223 rounds, fired from a AR-15 spin off made by Sig Sauer.

See? Even if it wasn't an AR-15, it used the same bullets. So it's an AR-15!! or something

“They requested individual anonymity in order to speak freely about such a sensitive topic. “

Which means they made it up.

Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47

Guess what kids? Daddy failed miserably. But it wouldn't be the first time the Pentagon selected and paid for a load of rubbish.

Ask the poor souls who had to use the M-16 in Vietnam. The barrel heated rapidly to the point where they could bend it against a tree trunk.

They were constantly on the look out for - wait for it - AK-47s that would fire consistently and were mostly immune to the jams and overheating of the M-16.

Wasn’t Velcro intended for space suits and not civilian application?

Wow. They THINK he would've been horrified. Nothing like emotional hedging to turn fiction into fact.

His family is just scared a reporter that showed up on their door step might open up the chance for a lawsuit so they say this crap to sound PC. Well f you’re so concerned about how bad you think the AR-15 is why don’t you pull your dad’s patent and refund all the money he made from the patent? Hmmm?

AR-15’s aren’t owned by civilians...they are owned by the informal U.S. militia.

Hopefully the family is prepared to forfeit any fruits from his fantastic invention to show they really mean it.

What have any of these points got to do with the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. Liberals can't help themselves creating compartments and divisions, chipping away so military weapons will no longer be available to civilians? They would like to create this military/civilian mindset and the weak, rubber spined Republicans may go along with it. So sad!

M-16 was garbage. The AR-10 is a good rifle though. US should of stuck with M-14.

Why is every Tom, Dick and Harry jumping on this bandwagon to attempt firearm removal? Do they think they’re that close to achieving their goals?

Sadly, I see a lot of bloodshed in our near future.

What a steaming pile. The guns ES designed were sold to civilians from the start, and full auto was an easily added option.

He, like other weapons makers, went after the gov’t market for the large contracts, not to exclude civilians.
