Trump: I’m going to meet with the NRA to discuss Dem gun-control proposal (More info)

The NRA gave Donald Trump an enthusiastic endorsement last month. The bill for that choice may be coming due for both the NRA and conservatives. Trump announced on Twitter that he will meet with the gun-rights advocacy group to discuss a gun-control proposal they vehemently oppose, but which Democrats have been demanding for months, if not years:

I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 15, 2016

Politico picked up on this almost immediately but could get no comment from Team Trump. The NRA hasn’t said anything about it yet, but their Twitter feed has pushed back against the use of watch lists:

Well besides the fact that there should be no meeting required to see that this is illegal, gathering info can help sometimes. I guess we'll have to wait until after the meeting to read/see/hear the outcome.

Grover Norquist has always stood in the way of common sense, which is why he is on the NRA Board Of Governors.

Hmmmm.

I thought Trump promised to protect our 2nd amendment rights.

That didn’t take long.

I think he’s gathering info so he understands the NO PROCESS rulings now. No conclusion jumping. LOL!

I guess it’s about forcing them to accept the Democrat bill.

Mr. Trump, if you choose to push the sacrifice of liberty of Americans for security, you will be no different than the POS tyrant that currently occupies the WH. If you do, it may well be your political Waterloo. The firearm is the only thing the US citizen has to keep this government at bay. Don’t eff us over.

It appears that Trump is going to align with the the prior GOP alternative to the Dems blanket "no-fly - no-buy." That would allow the DOJ only a 72-hour delay of a gun purchase by someone on the list - and then require the FBI to get a probable cause order from a judge to block the purchase OR by default allow the purchase.

Excerpt from theatlantic.com:

"Any debate on restricting gun sales to people on the watch list is likely to center on the due-process provisions in the legislation. Democrats say their bill allows individuals to appeal their placement on the list, but it did not go far enough for the NRA or Republicans. Most Republicans instead voted for an alternative proposed by Senator John Cornyn of Texas, which would have allowed the attorney general to delay a sale of firearms to someone on the watch list for up to 72 hours and required the FBI to obtain a court order blocking the sale if the judge found probable cause that the person “has committed or will commit an act of terrorism.” Democrats deemed that standard far too high, and most voted against the bill."

I don’t see Trump necessarily going wobbly. This is a big issue being pushed and Trump just said he’s going to seek input on it from the most authoritative organization in world on these matters. What’s wrong with that?

Mr. Trump, if you don’t want islamic terrorists to have American guns, then remove islamic terrorists from America.

You do not remove aspects of a society being used by attackers to harm the society, you remove the attackers.

To do otherwise is to be tricked by the attackers into attacking your own society on their behalf.

The democrats have brought islam here for the precise purpose of attacking our society, and their response to islamic attacks on our society is a tandem attack on Americans.

Do not aide our enemies.

Trump needs to consult with his spokesman:

Trump spox on FoxBiz just now: (7:30 MDT)

“If we’re not going to let people under FBI investigation buy guns, perhaps we shouldn’t let them run for President either.”

BRILLIANT!!!

I’m not alarmed yet. I think he is doing his thing, which is to listen to all voices. And be SEEN as listening to all voices. I would think that meeting with the NRA will make the left’s heads spin. They see NRA as incarnate EEEEEEeeevil. Then he will make his own decision based on the things he learns on the particulars of the law, procedures, and practices.

We know that NRA has, at least in the past, gone more wobbly on the 2nd than we would like, but it is also true that GOA and other organizations have begun to make them more honest.

so.... for now, I think he’s doing ok with this action.

There is nothing wrong with being vigilant.

There are so many bass turds presently in our government - on “both sides of the aisle” - who are so willing to sell out our constitutional rights that people are a bit skittish.

It’ll turn out OK.

I am not a gun lover by ANY stretch. Never owned one, don’t like them.

That said, the position he has implied that he took (people on terrorist watch list / no fly list shouldn’t be able to buy guns) is a negative. It’s absolutely an illegal overreaction to restrict gun sales that way.

Is he really married to that position? Who knows. It does sound like that’s where he’s leaning though and that’s wrong.

I think discussions are fine and new strategies even better. I don’t think one person on earth thinks that killer should have had a gun period.

It appears that he is willing to listen to why the NRA opposes preventing people on the no fly and terrorists watch lists. The short answer is because liberals will put the names of millions of law abiding Americans on the lists to deny them the right to purchase a firearm and there is no legal recourse to find out if you are on the list, who put you on the list, why you were put on the list, and to get removed from the list.

So anyone that criticizes the government is going to be on the terror watch list and no-fly list. Guilty until proven innocent.
