Minimum rage: Why Donald Trump is doing so well with the working class (Obama's fault free trade)

There was a moment during President Obama's speech at Rutgers on Sunday when he mentioned students who had to work to put themselves through college.

That included me, back when I went to Rutgers in the 1970s. But I lucked out. One summer, I got a job at the Ford factory a few miles up the road in Edison. When school resumed, they let me switch to part-time.

It was great. I could make as much in two shifts at the plant as I could have made working all week at a minimum-wage job.

Alas, Ford shut that plant down 12 years ago. I thought of that later in the speech when the topic turned to trade agreements.

"A lot of folks have legitimate concerns with the way globalization has progressed," Obama said. "That's one of the changes that's been taking place - jobs shipped overseas, trade deals that sometimes put workers and businesses at a disadvantage."

For a second there I thought Donald Trump had stormed the stage and taken over the microphone.

Constant annoyance with Obama: framing policy changes as if he's a passive observer. Trump won't have that issue https://t.co/J5zI3nnflm— Michael Tracey (@mtracey) May 23, 2016

I follow Michael Tracey because he is a cutting edge journalist who, while not a Trump supporter, sympathizes with Trump voters. He "gets it" - he gets why people are supporting Bernie and Trump over the establishment.

I look for outliers like that to follow which is also how I stumbled onto Scott Adams (Dilbert cartoonist) and his political analysis of the Trump phenomenon.

Anyway, Tracey's comment on the op-ed piece about how Obama pretends he had nothing to do with these free trade deals that take American jobs I think was right on the money on how people get angry every time the establishment politicians that screwed them over talk.

“sometimes put workers and businesses at a disadvantage”

Out of or unable to find work as a result is NOT a ‘disadvantage.’

There is nothing wrong with the principle of open markets but just as our country no longer has a true free market I do not think we engage in free trade. Instead, like most of our economy, trade is twisted by a giant mess of laws written to benefit those who enrich politicians and their ilk.

Trade is twisted by every country charging us tariffs on our exports and we do nothing to retaliate.

“I tell you what Free Traitors™ are doing exactly what Marx wanted them to do.”

Now Democrats support freedom to trade and Republicans (in name only) support central government planning and control.

The USA was extremely protectionist from 1789 to 1913. You got a problem with that? At least when you pay a sales tax or a tariff on an imported good nobody asks you if you went blind or turned 65 within the last year.

“The USA was extremely protectionist from 1789 to 1913”

True and that's when the USA was growing faster economically than any other country at that time.

Here is Trump in his own words explaining how China has been ripping the USA off , the greatest theft in history:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2016/04/17/trump_im_so_happy_china_is_upset_with_me.html
“Trump responded Sunday at a rally in Staten Island, NY, saying that over the course of the past thirty years, China has “waged an economic war against [the United States].”

“You have to look at my response to China,” Trump said excitedly. “Because it is what someone has to say. Because we can't continue to get ripped off like we're being ripped off. You've got to look at it... I'm not talking about war. But they have waged economic war against us.”

“And I'm not angry about China, in fact I respect them... I'm angry at our leaders for being so incompetent that they allow it to happen. And I said this as part of my response to the Wall Street Journal when they just called. I said, in the history of the world, this is the greatest theft ever perpetrated by anyone or any country, what China has done to us.”

“I see the empty buildings all over Staten Island,” he said. “I see them all over... Really really sad. That's not going to happen anymore with me.”

“The truth is, we have all the cards,” Trump said.

DONALD TRUMP, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK: Today [Sunday morning] on the top of Drudge [Report]. Matt Drudge is a phenomenal person and a good guy — it is a big deal, top of Drudge.

[Drudge linked to a piece in the Wall Street Journal saying] China is upset with Donald Trump.

How dare them? So they go — They're upset. This is the story — biggest story, top of Drudge. Big story.

China is upset because of the way Donald Trump is talking about trade with China. They're ripping us off, folks.

It is time. I'm so happy they're upset. They haven't been upset with us in thirty years.

They're never upset. We have a trade deficit with China of $500 billion per year. Okay? They tax. And you know they said we're not living up to treaties. They're the ones not living upo to agreements. They tax. I have friends who are manufacturers who can not get their product into China, and when they do, they have to pay a tax on it.

And let me tell you — It is them that is the problem. And they're going to treat us fairly and they're going to treat us justly or it is bye bye. Bye bye...

What we don't know because our leaders are incompetent, or because they are taken care of by the special interests. Which also happens...

[cut from video — interruption from a protester and a non-sequitur about Lyin’ Ted]

You have to look at my answer. My response to China. Because it is what someone has to say. Because we can't continue to get ripped off like we're being ripped off. You've got to look at it.

And it is not war. I'm not talking about war. But they have waged economic war against us.

What China has done —we have rebuilt China, so I hope you're all happy with that— In the meantime you can't get funding for your schools on Staten Island, or for your roads, which have potholes, I hate to say.

So Just so you understand, we have rebuilt China. They have bridges going up, they have railroads like you've never seen. We have the old Long Island railroad... like we're a third world country, folks.

They have trains that go 250 MPH, we have old stuff. So here's the story, what China has done to us —they are only one country, I hate to use them, but they are the biggest abuser— they abuse us beyond belief.

And I'm not angry about China, in fact I respect them, I made a lot of money with China... I'm not angry at China, I'm angry at our leaders for being so incompetent that they allow it to happen.

And I said this as part of my response to the Wall Street Journal when they just called.

I said, in the history of the world, this is the greatest theft ever perpetrated by anyone or any country, what China has done to us.

It is the greatest single theft. They have taken our jobs, they have taken our money, I mean I see the empty buildings all over Staten Island... I see them all over... Really really sad. That's not going to happen anymore with me..

Valid point you make but was I wrong with mine?

Democrats in national leadership have supported freedom to trade. Now “our side” supports having these basic freedoms curtailed by an all-knowing, benevolent federal government(?) in charge of economic planning and control. Bureaucrats and technocrats can intervene with taxation to shift outcomes, “protect” jobs, and pick winners and losers. Mark me down as skeptical on that!

Repeal the 16th amendment and I will revisit my opposition to new tariffs and the global trade war those would set off.

We are better off participating in a global economy than protecting ourselves from it. Ours is a dynamic economy and trade benefits both sides.

To be sure, that does not justify giving away one inch of sovereignty.

global trade war those would set off.

This is why I cannot "discuss" anything concern trade with you. We are up to out necks in a trade war now and to characterize a retaliatory tariff as "starting" a war is a misuse of logic, reason, and rhetoric to advance your faulty cause.

True and that's when the USA was growing faster economically than any other country at that time.

A trip across the country took months rather than one day.
The telegraph was the information superhighway.
Air-conditioning, refrigeration, modern medical technologies, modern conveniences, computing technology, etc. did not exist yet.

In short, that was a totally different world that no longer exists. Countries that try to base policy on conditions from over a hundred years ago will fall behind the rest of the world.

Adam Smith died in 1980 can we throw him in the dust bin of history?

Adam Smith’s seminal work on free enterprise is timeless, and is an excellent reminder that basic economic principles - especially regarding Supply and Demand - do not change over time, even if changes in technology drive significant changes in how markets allocate factors of production.
