U.S. judge upholds Virginia's voter ID law

RICHMOND, Va. (Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge on Thursday upheld a 2013 Virginia law requiring prospective voters to show an approved photo identification before they cast their ballots.

The state's Democratic Party had challenged the law, signed by former Republican Governor Robert McDonnell, saying it was politically motivated and intended to deter young and minority voters from turning out on Election Day.

"The court's mission is to judge not the wisdom of the Virginia voter ID law, but rather its constitutionality," wrote U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson in his decision.

While he noted that the measure created an "inconvenience" for potential voters who did not have drivers' licenses or other government-issued ID, he said that was not enough to strike it down.

"While the merits of this voter identification law, and indeed all aspects of Virginia's voting regime, can be reasonably debated, it remains true that Virginia has created a scheme of laws to accommodate all people in their right to vote," Hudson wrote.

Lawyers representing the state Democratic Party said in a filing that the Republican-dominated state legislature passed the photo ID law "to stall, if not reverse, the growing success of the Democratic Party in Virginia."

The state argued that ID was necessary to ensure that only registered voters cast ballots and to prevent voter fraud.

**The state argued that ID was necessary to ensure that only registered voters cast ballots and to prevent voter fraud.**

Totally sensible. But the dems don’t like it because it prevents the fraud they are so adept at — such as having dead people vote.

This country was doomed the minute we adopted the idea that anyone who is a citizen and over the minimum age should be allowed to vote. It was doubly doomed when the minimum age was dropped from twenty one years to eighteen years.

Well there goes the second prong of Gov. McAwful’s two-pronged strategy to deliver Virginia for Shillary. The first prong was allowing convicted felons (overwhelmingly Dims) to vote by executive fiat.

The Dims’ failure on the voter ID front may require voting a few more graveyards than usual, or bussing in more Mehicanos.

What they really fear is running a name through the records to turn up a want or warrant

It is interesting that the 2 noted decisions mean that you might have to prove that your name and face are related but don't have to prove you are an American.

The monstrous fascists of the Demagogic Party can't stuff the ballot box if Voter ID is in place. Thanks NormsRevenge.

It was doomed the minute it was opened up to those that DON’T own property.

IMO, it should exclude all put those that pay taxes (property for local [or those w/ a State sales tax but no income tax], State filing for State and 1040+ for Fed).

If you can vote the $$ out of the pocket of another citizen, per personal gain, you get NO vote (Not talking ‘FREE’ public accommodations - parks.)

Course, that still leaves the sports complexes/etc. up to the ignorant too...Just look at what Jax has put in: the largest jumbo-tron and POOLS! Yet, I’m sure we’ll have a lovely debate about the St. Johns and water w/out even hinting that the $$ spent for 10 days/yr @ the stadium could have paid for a de-sal plant!
