population explosion in urban centers around the world is expected to fuel an unprecedented demand for food that if not met could trigger economic upheaval and civil unrest on a global scale, according to a study published by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
Growing Food for Growing Cities forecasts that two-thirds of the worlds population, 6.3 billion people, will be squeezed into the cities by 2050 and that global food production would have to increase 50% to 60% to keep everyone fed. The worlds urban population now stands at 3.9 billion, according to the United Nations.
The threat is, will there be enough food produced for those people living in cities? said Dan Glickman, a former U.S. secretary of Agriculture and co-chair of the councils advisory group on the study. Will the supply chains to get the food to the urban areas be adequate to feed the people, and if not, will there be political and economic dislocation? Its a very, very serious problem and not enough people have been talking about it.
In order to meet an increased demand in growing cities, the system by which food is produced, processed and delivered will need to change, the report says. And that transformation must target the food supply network in low- and middle-income countries, especially those in Asia, Africa and Latin America where feeding urban populations has become an urgent and critical challenge, according to the study.

The only solution: Kill the Kulaks and seize their grain.
If people have more children then they can feed, then those children will starve. It’s the circle of life.
The most serious “unrest” will be caused by the election of Hillary.
Flashback to the 70s? Paging Paul Erlich.
NWO
BS. Five minutes on Google would show that the global population will peak in the 21st Century.
SHTF bad for city peeps. See Venezuela...
Ya could always get to know your neighbor, have him over for dinner, or sumpthin'.
The West needs to feed the starving in Africa. That way, their population will triple in a generation. Problem solved!
I’d think a lack of food would cause a city to stop growing?
“could”
If there isn’t enough food, cities won’t grow to 6.3 billion, though globully, there could be shortages and cities could be hit really hard.
No, there’s always Soylent Green.
With some fava beans and a fine Chianti.
Granted, I live in the country, and was brought up on a ranch-just about everyone here has enough of a garden for most of their own veggies at the least-but is there any reason why neighborhoods in cities can’t set aside vacant lots for veggie co-ops, neighborhood chicken populations for eggs and meat-and what about all the pigeons flying around in cities-why not keep them, too-they are just as yummy as quail-and how about rabbits...
Are the people who did this “study” saying that people in cities are unable to grow/raise crops and chickens, etc for their own food? That is a bit insulting-they had better learn, or they might starve if the grid goes down, or some other catastrophe...
But we know who’s breeding. Single moms, ethnic.
The growth of cities in the last generation is not primarily from childbirth and added population, but from moving from rural areas to cities. People eat the same amount wherever they livelive, so they don’t need to grow more food. What developing nations don’t have is the logistics to move food into their cities. This is all technology and systems that we have developed in the 20th and 21 centuries. It just needs to be applied in other countries. No crisis.
Build the wall, deport the illegals, and to hell with what happens in their cities.
