That has been my observation of Trump supporters that I interact with. ===

Yeah, as a group, they're sick and tired of "conservatives" that haven't done anything to stop the march of socialism in America. After - what? - 30 years of this Shrub/Dole/Shrub/McCain/RuinMe/Democrat-light/well-we-tried/we're-just-the-opposition crap, Aggressive Trump's the logical choice. The obvious choice. Contrary to what DC and the rest of the world thinks, most Americans are not stupid.

Cruz won the “very conservative” vote over Trump. Trump won the “conservative”. This poll includes Kasich supporters in the non-Trump group. I don’t think you need to worry about Cruz supporters’ mental health.

I actually heard Michael Medved balance the loss of the supreme court for a generation with -are you ready? - the risk of war with Mexico under Trump!

By my lights we are already at war with Mexico!

And as long as he governs that way, I am fine with it. What concerns me is that I have seen and heard a whole lot of NY liberal out of Trump in the past. IOW, as long as Trump remains anti-GOPe, and stays conservative, I can hold my nose over his personality traits and support him in the General.

However, start to compromise or negotiate away from the conservative positions, then depending how far towards the middle he moves, will determine if I vote for him in the general.

Similarly, protectionism (of certain politically connected industries) is typically a liberal faux populist response

Not true. Protectionism for US industry goes all the way back to the founding fathers. The Republicans of the industrial revolution from the Civil War up through McKinley were protectionist. Coolidge was protectionist. So was Ike. So was Reagan. So is Trump. So are all other real conservatives.

If a politician is against the best interests of most US citizens, just what is he/she pretending to conserve?

The establishment Republicans since Teddy Roosevelt have been liberal progressives; not conservatives. The "social conservatives" are mostly nanny-state theocrats; not conservatives.

Agree - I’m not saying at all that he’s any kind of savior. It’s a mistake to expect that out of any of these people. I’m saying Trump’s the best alternative after so many Beltway “conservatives” have consistently failed us. Yeah, sure, we’ll need to stay vigilant if he makes it into office - you cant fully trust any of these people.

Mark Belling is an idiot.

Conservative is as Conservative does.

Politicians are all talk NO ACTION.

Don’t tell me what a conservative is or isn’t, I know the difference.

“Professional politicians” self identify as “conservative” when it suits them or their agenda...They do it when giving speeches to their constituents...

When they are in the “hallowed halls” of Washington, it is a different matter...They go whichever way they need to go to keep their cushy lifestyles going and keep their invitations to the lavish parties intact...

Sorry effin’ people,they are.......

They're terrified that they're not going to have the luxury of playing pretend conservative anymore under a President Trump.

It's put up or shut up time for the "conservative? elites". Their style of conservatism allows for their hands in the taxpayer cookie jar. Gosh, they really hate to see it end.

From what I read of the article (using the term article rather loosely since it was more of a compilation of twitter posts and images than any actual reporting or analysis of data), it appears that the word “conservative” does not necessarily mean what the Gateway Pundit thinks it means. The statements or positions that were compared as supported by Trump supporters vs GOP voters at large were not measures of conservatism/liberalism in general. The one issue that comes closest to being a measure of either economic or political conservatism was the issue of trade, and the protectionist/anti-trade position is a politically and economically liberal position.

I thought so.

I consider myself VERY conservative and just want Trump to enact the major portions of his plans - deport, wall, no Muslims, and bring companies back.

All the rest just don’t matter in comparison to doing something that will fix this country NOW before it is too late.

Cruz’s policies were fine - but he was very late in talking about deportation and the wall. In fact, in the beginning he skirted around the amnesty issue. NOBODY talked about a wall until Trump - it was just a fence before then.

If Cruz wouldn’t talk about it, he certainly wouldn’t do it when faced with any opposition.

But Trump is a fighter, is brave, is not PC - and would be the most likely to turn things around, IMO. So this very conservative woman was 100% for Trump when he started talking deportation and the wall. And it just got better from there.

They are just finding out that Conservatism does not work for conservatives. But, only for the Chamber of Commerce and their ilk.

You are correct.
In fact, Tariffs funded all of our government up to the imposition of Income taxes in 1913.
The politicians claimed that Tariffs were necessary to protect our “infant industries” which was complete bullshit. Rather they were imposed in response to crony capitalists, in order to keep out superior goods from Britain, and in particular Germany, post-unification in 1870.
