German authorities are investigating 40 cases in which Islamic militants are suspected of having entered the country with the recent flood of refugees from the Middle East, the federal police said on Wednesday.
That represents a doubling of such cases since January and is likely to deepen concerns about the threat level in Germany, which has not suffered a large-scale Islamist attack like those that have rocked neighbours France and Belgium in recent months.
In the past, the German government has played down the risks of Islamic State fighters entering Europe with the tide of migrants, in part to avoid exacerbating public concerns about the influx, which hit a record 1.1 million last year.
But the head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency Hans-Georg Maassen told a conference last week that although there were more efficient ways to smuggle in fighters, Islamic State appeared to have sent some via the Balkan route from Greece in order to fan fears about refugees and "send a political signal".
"I am not telling you a secret when I say that I am concerned about the high number of migrants whose identities we don't know because they had no papers when they entered the country," Maassen said.

I noticed in German news from three months ago....the immigration office folks (national office) came to admit that they’ve realized that ‘duplicate’ people exist in the system. There’s such and such Hamad guy in Heidelberg, and they eventually figure out that the same Hamad guy is registerd in Bremen. Pictures are viewed and confirmed....same guy. Then he disappears.
They have the same problem with roughly five thousand foreign kids who’ve disappeared. The cops look over the facts....parent or parents not too upset...and figure that the family registered four kids under them when they only had one or two actual kids....the others were “borrowed” from some relative or friend. Gets you more money from the authorities, and larger apartment.
If you were looking for a really lousy way to run a immigration program, the Germans built a five-star loser.

We do know the vast majority are disproportionally male and of military age. The PC crowd would like to delude themselves into thinking they are just nice young men fleeing the meat grinder of the draft.
The reality is that they didn't start coming in large numbers until Russian support for Assad started turning the tide of the Syrian civil war. So the chances are pretty good that most of them saw the writing on the wall and got out of Dodge while they could. That would include the backers of rebel groups aligned with ISIS and Al Qaida.
When the Islamic terrorists go from sleepers to active mode, I will pop some popcorn and watch Germany burn.
I will not, however, shed any tears for uber-liberal Euro-weenies.
