The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Thursday that it is expanding Medicaid coverage to give "access to health care" to 96,000 people who face a prison sentence or have been incarcerated - or "justice-involved" individuals - as part of the federally designated National Re-Entry Week.
"Today, HHS strengthened access to health care for individuals transitioning from incarceration back to their communities," the press release stated. "New Medicaid guidance released today updates decades-old policy and clarifies that individuals who are currently on probation, parole or in home confinement are not considered inmates of a public institution."
"It also extends coverage to Medicaid-eligible individuals living in community halfway houses where they have freedom of movement, improving access to care for as many as 96,000 individuals in Medicaid expansion states over the course of the year."
According to an issue brief released by HHS in conjunction with the announcement, there are 2.2 million people currently incarcerated and 4.7 million people under probation or parole in the United States.
"Justice involved individuals include anyone who is currently or has been involved with the criminal justice system. This includes individuals who are awaiting trial, convicted of a crime, on probation, under home confinement, incarcerated in jail or prison, under community residential supervision, or on parole. Many justice involved individuals are eligible for Medicaid if they meet the state's financial and non-financial eligibility (including citizenship or eligible immigration status and state residency)."

“Justice involved” health care, brought to you by the JUST-US department.
And will take medicaid away from the people who paid into the system.
Gotta pay for those sex changes.
Obama - Did you add the prisoners?
No, but that might work, I'll get started on it right away!
Stop the satire, I want to get off.
Justice involved Medicaid?
I sincerely hope this is lethal injection drugs.
(sniffle) Boobamba's got a "heart of gold".
Guy never saw a social misfit he didn't want to subsidize (sob).
A very disturbing question that patriots need to ask concerning people facing a federal prison sentence is this. How many of these people broke a federal law based on powers which the states have never delegated to the feds expressly via the Constitution? Such people should not be having legal problems with the feds imo.
Otherwise, with the exception of PC medical operations, sex mutilation operations for example, which the feds shouldnt be paying for imo, and major constitutional problems with Obamacare aside, I think that the feds do have the constitutional authority to pay for reasonable healthcare needs of bona-fide federal prisoners.
Insights, corrections welcome.
Will Hillary qualify for medicaid as a justice involved individual?
The war on drugs is a Republican mess and it's done a lot to erode personal freedoms in the United States from banking privacy, civil asset forfeiture, to the right to privacy in our homes and personal effects.
