The 5 people most likely to be Donald Trump’s vice president
Washington Post ^ | 4/29 | Chris Cilliza

Posted on 04/29/2016 12:55:57 PM PDT by TangledUpInBlue

Which begs the question: Who is he going to pick as his vice presidential nominee?

The short answer: No one knows. Trump relishes being unpredictable so trying to game out how this most unconventional of politicians will make his mind up is a bit of a guessing game. Add to that the fact that Trump's inner circle remains, largely, devoid of establishment types and you quickly get into a situation where the people talking don't know much and the people who do know aren't talking.

An interesting list. A couple of serious buffoons on there if they actually do it after all that's been said.

And I still can't see Christie. He won't help Trump in NJ and two brash personalities from the NY area? Doesn't make much sense.

I’ll file this with the predictions he was just running to help Hillary, he wouldn’t stay in, he had hit his ceiling, any then he was going to drop out.

Spit!

Why would Trump soil his brand with any of them?

I would see Susan Martinez from NM before Christie. Ernst is an interesting concept. Spanish-speaking woman would be the best bet.... But then OH and FL are critical.

I don’t think a whole lot of thought went into compiling that list.

Except Rubio won’t help him in Florida.

I really don’t think that Chris Cilliza knows who Donald Trump is going to pick as his vice presidential candidate. I doubt that Chris Cilliza knows much of anything about Donald Trump or most other Republicans, for that matter.

Or, more likely, the WaPo is seeing things through Rove-colored glasses...

Trump has been very unpredictable. I bet it will be someone nobody is thinking about. Of the five, I really don’t want Kasick or Christie. If we can overlook rubios immigration which he will have zero control over as VP, he might be ok. Ernst is interesting if he feels he has to play the political game. I’ll accept anyone he picks as long as it’s not Cruz.

Trump should realize, if he doesn’t already (and I think he does), that his nomination, and eventual election, will be the start of a complete remaking of the Republican Party in a new image—I have some theories about that image, but that is for another thread.

My advice, therefore (which is worth every penny he is paying for it), is that Trump not think about his VP choice in terms of election strategy, but in terms of succession. I say this for two reasons: first, it is quite possible that he will not survive two full terms, and he needs someone to step in who will not walk back what he accomplishes, and who will continue to work on what he wants to accomplish; second, the GOPe, if they have to participate in a Trump presidency, are going to work to undermine it both during and afterward, and he will need someone to succeed him who will fight against that.

That being said, I have no idea whom that person would be. There is no politician I can think of who is supportive enough of Trump and also young enough to succeed him (e.g., Sen. Sessions is the same age as Trump). He could, if he were willing to risk it, pick a strategic VP for his first term, and then find out who would be the best successor and have that person run with him in 2020, but that could always backfire, as it did with Lincoln picking Andrew Johnson in 1864, or McKinley picking Teddy Roosevelt in 1900, or Kennedy picking Lyndon Johnson in 1960. OTOH, Reagan should have changed his VP in 1984 when he could have afforded to do it politically, for a successor like Jack Kemp or Newt Gingrich, and we’ve been living with the effects of that non-act ever since.

I’m betting Trump goes with a private sector CEO

I predict that WaPo will be just as accurate in predicting possible VP choices as they’ve been in predicting Trump’s political demise.

She’s anti-Trump and had a little problem involving a hotel, alcohol and the police...and her position as Gov. She’s since apologized, but the damage is done.

Not even close. The majority on the list are proven losers. When has anyone predicted anything correctly when it comes to Trump’s campaign? The only thing thing predictable is that he wins while running counter to conventional wisdom at every turn.
