OXFORD The City Council on Tuesday made it illegal for anyone to use a public bathroom that doesnt align with the gender they were born with.
The new law, approved unanimously by the councils members, restricts a persons use of public bathrooms and changing rooms to the facilities designated for use by those of the gender listed on his or her birth certificate. The law applies within both the citys limits and police jurisdiction.
After members approved the new city ordinance, Council President Steven Waits read from a prepared statement.
Waits said he and the council sought the law not out of concerns for the 0.3 percent of the population who identify as transgender, but to protect our women and children.
He said the measure isnt meant to be discriminatory, and comes in direct response to the bathroom and changing-room usage policy put forth by supermarket chain Target, which has a store at Oxfords Exchange shopping center.
The company posted that policy in a blog on its website last week, referencing recent debate around proposed laws in several states.
That debate has been heated in North Carolina, where news outlets report that scores of protesters have been arrested this week while demonstrating for or against a statewide law that extends similar restroom restrictions.
We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity, read the companys post, put online last Tuesday.
Waits said hes received an overwhelming number of complaints from city residents regarding the companys policy since it was announced.
Under the new law, alleged violations must be reported by a witness or committed in front of a police officer to be prosecutable.
Those found to have violated the law would be fined $500, or sentenced to six months in jail.
There are some exceptions to the new rule, though: Adults are allowed to accompany children under the age of 12 into the restroom. Those who need to do janitorial or maintenance work, to offer emergency medical assistance, or to assist the disabled, likewise are permitted to enter any bathroom.
Look for a Soros-backed leftist group to sue your fair town.
That’s why we need to overwhelm them. Every town in the USA should pass such an ordinance. They can’t sue us all.
Hurrah for Oxford, Alabama!
Home of Jacksonville University.
Climb aboard, Anniston.
Oxford where? Mississippi? England? Tennessee? Pluto? A city name alone doesn’t tell the reader much.
Get ready for Marriott, PayPal, Apple, Coca-Cola and a host of other enlightened corporations to threaten to stop doing business with your city.
BTW, is it Oxford, Mississippi or Oxford, Alabama or...?
“Thats why we need to overwhelm them. Every town in the USA should pass such an ordinance. They cant sue us all.”
Exactly! It’s time for all cognizant individuals and communities to stand up against this utter lunacy for the sake of our families. Enough!
Good move. Thank you Oxford, ALA!
Articles like this should really use “sex” for the biological component that cannot be changed.
“Gender” is a grammatical category that the activists co-opted. Precisely because it allows more fluidity.
I live in this area. Great for Oxford. Anniston is a cess pool. Oxford has all the businesses and all the money now. It is on I-20 and is the strong point of the county now. Target will probably threaten to leave. Good. Leave. Who gives a rat’s hip pockets. I have been in that store four or five times in 10 years I have been back here in my home county. Someone has to put a foot down and say enough is ENOUGH!!! These people are going to allow sexual perverts to enter women’s bath rooms and rapes are going to be the results or the kidnapping of little girls by perverts to take the children for their sick perverted means.
Alabama
Good but unenforceable. The only solution is to have several single-person toilets, with one extra large for the handicapped and their assistants.
Costs too much money? then eat the lawsuits.
Alabama apparently.
Ping to the state list for Alabama.

No - that is not a solution...
A quick click on the link shows Alabama.
I beg to differ. OF COURSE it is discriminatory. We shouldn't take the leftist value system on its face. Requiring men to use the men's room and woman to use the women's room IS discriminatory. And there's nothing wrong with that.
As long as we willingly agree to use the left's vocabulary as valid, we will eventually lose.
As an aside, Oxford is next door to Anniston, AL, former home to the US Army Chemical Corps and Military Police schools at the now closed Fort McClellan. Also in the area is the Anniston Army Depot, where US Army tanks are sent to be repaired and reconditioned.
It is a peculiar place, in the foothills between the rather primeval Cheaha National Forest, and the Talladega swamp, known for its NASCAR Race.
On the other hand, the nickname of the newspaper at least used to be the Anniston “Red” Star.
Is Jacksonville University within the city limits (and thus subject to this new ordinace)?
Does the University have a similar “tolerant” policy as Target?
If so, any outcry from the University and/or its students demanding “safe space”?
