“Oh really? By whom? He presented himself on his own to capitalize on his achievement and was in fact criticized by his fellow seals.”

O’Neill told the Post he decided to publicize his role after becoming certain that his identity would soon be leaked. Formerly a tightly held secret, the information became widely known in military circles and among members of Congress and at least two press organizations, he said.

I choose not to call him a liar. He says he was told that it was leaked and wanted to tell his accurate story.

Some of the laws arte stupid. If I went out and had a few and I would say I am over the limit then I would go to sleep , but here in FL I could get done for DUI even though I never put the key in the ignition.

Just said the same.
I leave a bar, go to sleep in the car , but never even started the car I then would get done for DUI, .It is so stupid and the cops should have some common sense instead of making a name for themselves.

That scenario happened to a friend in Colorado. Sleeping off a drunk in his truck, no keys in the ignition.

DUI, off to jail for this highly decorated VN vet as it was his third infraction.

Seems he has a real problem—and needs some correction—but the driving part is a puzzler.

Nobody is exempt from our laws while being behind the wheel of a car when intoxicated..........

Unless they are a politician or have rich parents.

That is an excellent point!

There is no way of knowing if in fact he was given a ride home on other occasions.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Strangely, during my 25 years working for a city fire department I went to a lot of people who were drunk and/or on drugs sleeping in running cars. Often the car was in the road, surprisingly often in the middle of an intersection in drive with just their heavy drunk foot on the brake keeping the vehicle from moving. And a of course we also went to many cars that were still running at the side of the road with the person still asleep after a low speed collision with a post, poll or other solid object. This actually happens just as often as a drunk falling asleep at highway speeds and running off the road. Only that is traumatic enough that they are usually awake or dead.

One time we went to a guy who fell asleep and had run over one a planter in the middle of one of those new round-a-bouts. It split his car into two pieces which were still connected at the floor, but it looked very strange. Unfortunately, his feet were in the front half and the rest of him was in the back half. He was sleeping or unconscious when we got there. But when we decided we had to get him out in a hurry and I started pulling on him he perked right up. His feet were catching up under the dash and both his ankles were broken.

One of my crew yelled, “don’t pull on him anymore or I think you will rip his feet off. So we had to spend a few more minutes getting his feet unhooked from the mess he had made out of the front of his car. Along with the smell of booze we kept smelling this strong solvent odor.

In the trunk he had a bunch of chemicals from a portable drug lab. Some of which were broken and creating a fire and health hazard for everyone on scene. It is possible that the chemicals were partially responsible for his inability to stay awake. So life lesson #246, if you are drunk and waiting to move your drug lab in the middle of the night... make sure you take a nap before hand. And also make sure that none of your solvent containers are air tight. If you can’t do that at least choose a route that has no round-a-bouts that might get in the way while you are snoozing in your car.

I used to drive OTR tractor/trailers.

I would pull off on a legal shoulder when tired and take a power nap sitting at the wheel with the motor running.

In neutral w/the brakes applied.

One time I woke up and hearing the motor running slammed on the brakes with the foot pedal!

Then discovered the vehicle wasn’t moving.

What an adrenalin rush, got to the yard WIDE awake lol

I can relate as to your story. Before I became a firefighter, I worked in a family lumber business. One time I went to an auction about 300 miles away and bought a bunch of lumber mill equipment. The way things worked out I ended up staying up for over 24 hours. On the way back all the rest stops were full. I finally got off the freeway and drove down a rural side road until I found a nice open field to park in. I turned the truck engine off. It was actually just a 1966 Ford C700 Cabover 5 ton dump truck loaded up high like a 1930s Arkansas Prairie Schooner. It is surprising what we used to be able to get away with.

When I woke up in the morning there were kids climbing all over my truck and getting into my saw blades, planer knives, rip saw, swing saw, and a bunch of other sharp dangerous lumber mill equipment and actually running off with some smaller things. I had parked at the side of a play ground for a school. This was long enough ago that they didn’t have any fences around it. I chased off all the kids and took off before the duty teacher caught up with me. Hopefully none of the kids hurt themselves with the stuff they stole. Although at the time I wouldn’t have felt all that badly if they had.
