Last time I flew outta LAS we were taking off and there was a Virgin airline 747 that was trying to land, He was long and had to go around to do it again. Problem was, we were already on the way and we watched that 747 comming right straight at us. They might have thought it was a long way off but..

It was to late to abort. Gull dang, that one shook me up. Somebody screwed up.

Right smack in the middle of the city. RIGHT SMACK IN THE MIDDLE.

Whaddya mean? It's supposed to be there! Barry Goldwater scraped out the runway hisself! The planes fly up the riverbed and over low-rent industrial and acres of freeway to get there! It's a perfect spot! No driving hundreds of miles to get to the airport!

The ballparks and office buildings an infill housing along the approach and departure corridors were built long after the airport was opened. Frankly I think people had a choice, and the choice was to accept the risk.

If you think that is in the middle of the city, try San Diego Lindbergh, Boston Logan, Laguardia, Kennedy, or Washington National.

If you google map Sky Harbor there is nothing to the south and the E-W approaches parallel I-10 with not a lot of developed area underneath. Yes you can see downtown Phoenix to the north when you fly in. In San Diego you fly through downtown to land on runway 27.

There are airports smack dab in the middle of a lot of cities, right near me it’s LAX and John Wayne, in most cases the airports and cities grew together.

If you think that is in the middle of the city, try....

Always found it amusing to note you can peer into back yards and bedroom windows when landing at Midway...right up to about 2 seconds before the wheels touch the runway.

Airbus’s answer to the 757. Boeing and Airbus both make good aircraft, and they both have occasional problems.

Did you see the first passenger Airbus made in America made its first flight last week?

Yes, I forgot that view. Usually OHare though.

Also another fun game to play is counting the fires when approaching Detroit from the north.

One time while landing at LAX I noticed some jack rabbits hunkered down not too far from the runway. They were deaf from the aircraft noise. I suspect they are no longer there.

Hey, what does this button do?

LMAO, I watched an old rerun of Laverne and Shirley last nite - they're on a plane, Shirley spills hot coffee on the pilot, he stands up fast and conks his head and passes out - Laverne ends up flying the plane, at one point air traffic controller tells her to press the yellow button, she mistakenly presses the orange one, ooops, just dumped all the fuel!

I fly from Appleton to LAS a lot. Up in the midwest they have problems with Geese. Have actually been on a plane that took off and flew over a flock of geese next to the airport.

They have tried everything to get rid of them. Folks are not hunting them like they used to.

That is why I tend to try and fly out of smaller airports, if I can get direct flights that is.

Dec. 31, 2015: FAA Proposes Fixes to Boeing 767 Emergency Escape Slides

I went to Europe in the mid 1980s on a 767 a few months after it was approved "over water" (twin engine regs at the time) flights. We had a service deplaning in Paris, then back on to Zurich.

The plane's at the ramp in Zurich, and we're waiting to get off, and waiting and waiting, and finally the line moves.

Exiting the plane, the extended, and deflated slide - from visible knife punctures - is pushed up along one side of the skyway.

Bottom line is that a slide problem existed some 30 years ago.

Checking the fine print in my homeowner’s insurance policy... yep... page 1,632 of the items exempted from coverage: inflatable slides falling from commercial aircraft.
