Donald Trump said Wednesday that reporter Michelle Fields would likely have pressed battery charges even if Corey Lewandowski had apologized for grabbing her “because I think she likes it,” implying she wanted the attention.
On NBC’s Today, hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie asked Trump to explain his stalwart defense of his campaign manager. Lauer at one point resignedly asked if this whole thing would be moot if Lewandowski had apologized in the first place.
“I actually don’t think so,” Trump said. “I think she would have pressed charges anyway because I think she likes it. That’s my opinion. Maybe I’m wrong. If he called up, if he said he’s sorry, I think she would have used that against him … Certainly, if that could have happened, he would have done that, and I wasn’t involved in that … I don’t think anything would have happened. I think we’d be in the same place.”
He added an apology would have given her “a little bit better evidence.”
“Why don’t we say we’ll agree to disagree on this, Mr. Trump,” Lauer said.
“Well I don’t think you can disagree, Matt, because the evidence is the evidence, and most people would disagree with you,” Trump said.
The strange saga began earlier this month when Fields and others asserted Lewandowski had seized her arm with enough force to leave bruises at a press scrum in Florida.
Lewandowski emphatically denied ever touching Fields, and Trump himself implied Fields made it up, but Jupiter, Florida, police filed battery charges against Lewandowski on Tuesday. The department released video showing him clearly yanking her arm. Since then, the campaign has rallied behind Lewandowski, and Trump has mocked Fields’ complaint and said the video shows the incident has been blown out of proportion.

I my opinion, the threshold for filing charges is where lies the problem these days. I don’t believe the bruises are from this interaction. It’s just too easy for anyone to sue anyone. Period.
Nobody should be in the reporter arena if they can’t take some pushing and shoving.

In this situation, I believe that he’ll come out on top the more information comes out about the accuser and the DA.
I just heard on the radio that the prosecutor filing charges against Trump’s campaign manager has close ties to the Hillary Clinton campaign.
They’re just making Trump more and more popular. He doesn’t have a right to grab her arm, though. That is simple battery if someone wants to push it.

It is not simple battery because there are defenses, exceptions, circumstances to any criminal charge. This is a misuse of the law.
A reporter following a political candidate around is not just a poor little girl that gets manhandled. It’s part of the job and situation that folks are going to get jostled and even moved out of the way.
This whole thing about “against her will” is part of it, as a reporter pushing in past secret service to get an interview, you place yourself in a situation where you can expect to be moved away. It’s therefore not “against your will” in the criminal sense.
This is just one of many legal points. A major one is that it can be seen to be a non incident on the videos. This all happened in a split second Corey isn’t even looking at her he’s just going past.
We can’t allow all behavior to be criminalized.
It is my opinion that if Trump would back off, fire Lewandowski or either of them apologize, the bastards would use THAT against him.
Ditto if he should knuckle to their wheedling for him to be “more presidential”. They’d beat him over the head with THAT, and say he’d gone soft, that he’s wimped out; and Cruz would put out bulletins saying that Trump’s going to hang it up.....and everybody come vote for me.
After much consideration, I don’t think there is much, in the realm of treachery that Cruz wouldn’t try. And to think; he once was my first pick! Glad I kept my eyes open.
Michelle seems to have a history of going from one boyfriend to another. Jamie Weinstein better enjoy the ride while he can because she is much more attractive than he is.
He’s consumed with pushing her story. I believe he’s trying to hang on for as long as he can. He’s enjoying the ride.
Everything Trump said makes perfect sense. An apology would have led to demands for his resignation, and would have been an “admission” for her stupid criminal charge.
Trump knows that sometimes you just tell public leeches to go to hell. You don’t apologize to them.
